Yikes,.. I just got a call from my oil company,..they found what they said were
a few drops of oil from a tank and deemed it a leaker,..yeah its probably old, came with buying the house. They pumped it out to a temporary tank and gave me a price of a new one and getting rid of the bad one,..for 5,700 dollars.Do you know if that price about right?
And has anyone had their oil company use "TANK GUARD"? They do that automatically to the tank at my house and it does fairly good warren tee if your tanks leak. --73.126.xx.xxx |

Carol - just went through this. Had two tanks leaking and old.
Had difficulty getting people to do the job.
Apparently, the issue is the oil pumping, tank removal and discard.
The "easy" part was the new tank install.
My bill was $7000 !
I have no experience with Tank Guard.

NE, We have something here called the DEC which is an offshoot of the EPA. They are the Praetorian Guard of the Environmental Whackos. If they catch a regular "scrap guy" hauling an old oil tank there are massive fines associated with it if you aren't "certified" in oil tank disposal.
Most scrappers won't take the chance of being on the open road with an old oil tank. Thus the high prices. I will say that we have a very small HVAC company and we don't charge that much. --64.246.xxx.xx |

This is exactly why we went to all heat pumps many decades ago. Prior to EPA and DHEC you could empty and remove fuel tanks all day long. You could see it coming...
If it has not already been reported as a leaker, I'd still rent the backhoe and DIY. I have some rural properties...put that fuel tank on top of a bonfire to clean all the residual, then to the scrap yard. --74.222.xx.xxx |

It's just that I just paid for a sewer pipe that required the floor of the basement apt ripped up and repaired plus about 100 feet of it under the driveway to a tune of 18 K At least they are going to allow payment monthly, and it rents cover that and more so I will be able to pay it off fairly soon. --73.126.xx.xxx |

Carol, Maybe try a gen contractor you've worked with in the past for an estimate.
NE(PA) is correct about the HVAC people overcharging.
Get a few more eyes on the issue and get that price down.
Maybe call some heating oil companies in your area too.
It's tough because of the disposal of the tank and residue oil. Good luck. Let us know how it goes please.

I read somewhere, that plumbers were the next millionaire class. I can see the value in that where we as a society have pushed so many people into college degree programs and fewer into the trades.
I can see where that will shift back again when the rates get adjusted to the correct level. What I hear here, is that time is coming sooner than some expect --24.101.xxx.xxx |
