Is it possible to run a background check with a passport?

They have no drivers license or other US ID. I do not know what all is required of them to get a passport, so maybe they had to be background checked?

Don't think I will be able to really run any credit check and they have no bank account.

Thank you for any input. --73.108.xxx.xxx

Your right, Richard. The only somewhat security measure I would have is the in-home visit. Even that is not going to resolve some issues. --73.108.xxx.xxx

When they submit a background check they will have to enter their ss# to verify identity. But not having the other ID or bank account info is a red flag. Running or hiding or fake. Do they have rental history? --172.59.xxx.xxx

iA passport is good for identification where can verify that is the person. A person with a criminal record will not be allowed into country. The best way is three pieces of identification. If they have a job than most companies will run a background check and credit check. A common trick is to change one letter in surname where credit report comes back no identity. Identification with a picture where picture must match person. Any excuse that lost something like a birth certificate then no then no way. --216.110.xxx.xxx

6man,

My screening checklist has 19 points. Only one point is the credit report which requires SS#.

It is up to the applicant to provide info to approve them. Be careful to not fill in the gaps yourself or make assumptions.

Paystubs, present and previous LL, court records...before a CR.

You need a ss# to run credit/criminal. A passport should suffice as ID. I think your places are more rural so without a drivers license, how are they driving to work, etc? I takes me wonder why they don’t have one. DWI revocation, disability so they can’t drive, fears/anxiety of driving, too lazy to get one, just moving from an urban area where driving wasn’t needed, non US passport just moving here and haven’t gotten a license yet? --73.159.xxx.xx

The only times I’ve had prospects provide their passports was when they were trying to hide their current address. They entered their phony current address as a house that was being sold, but when I ran their name through our court database, they were being sued by their current landlord, which was an apartment complex, for $15k for lost rent. --73.147.xxx.xx

Someone who has work authorization will generally have another form of ID that allows them to work. Some of my guys have a ss card that's specifically for work.

A passport is a good first step. You can't get utilities in your name without it.

A job is a second good first step. You can tell the difference between someone who works legally vs someone who works under the table.

Screening for credit or criminal is the next basic layer. If you're not wanting to do business with a population that can't pass a credit or criminal background check, then your screening has done its job. Although there are also people who prefer to deal on a cash basis in general, and deliberately avoid the debt cultivation that leads to a credit score--- so while you're figuring out whether a credit score is an indicator or a must-have, keep that in mind.

But ultimately, an unstable population (with ni history and minimal documentation) runs the risk of being unstable (in their business dealings). If you're comfortable with that, do business. If you've got a more stable population of potential tenants to choose from, then don't mess with catering to unstable people, regardless of nationality.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

For a little more detail, this is a family from Guatemala. Has work there, working for another Spanish speaking, self-employed, with a business, person who did the translating for us. Currently has been renting a one room apartment with his family of 5. I would be able to get proof of rent, but not much else. His employer was the translator. --73.108.xxx.xxx

Hard pass for me as well. As Brad said, it's up to THEM to provide me what I need. There is no law that says I must do the leg work. If they can't provide it, no worries. They'll find a mom and pop landlord who takes cash and doesn't ask questions.

Thank you again.

I am rejecting this group. They also didn't fill out but 1 application and not correctly. Plus, the ID's he texted me won't even work and it includes one from a person not mentioned.

I put up yard signs to try and get more inquiries because it appears no one is moving. I am trying to weed out the trash, but the yard sign has done nothing but draw in the trash and the ones that don't speak English. I have removed the yard signs. I am tired of fooling with people that can't or won't follow directions. Back to automation. --73.108.xxx.xxx

Two days since my ad went live for an upcoming apartment.

Four inquiries. Three have discrepancies on the application. Fourth one wants to move closer to her father. I looked into him and he is bad mojo. Drugs, fights, etc.

That would be fine for making sure the picture matches the name. You could then take the SSN that they provide you and see if that matches the name on the credit profile.

But I tend to agree with the others something doesn't seem right. It is alright for them to leave the country, but not drive? That might make doing a skip trace that much harder. --24.101.xxx.xxx
