Entitled Buyers (by Ray-N-Pa [PA]) Posted on: Sep 30, 2024 7:35 AM

I sold a unit on Friday and these folks were over the top for even a post C-19 world. They wanted me to prove that the power company was indeed qualified to work on the meter base. Earlier they wanted to question its load management practices. These are power company issues not a Ray issue, but these first time buyers were incredibly though.

I normally try to spoon feed my buyers by helping them out with a list for shifting of utilities. The power provider here is a Co-op so membership registration (in person) is required. With them being such a PITA, I "accidentally" forgot to give them this info. I drove on by the place on Sunday and the lights were still out for some strange reason after I turned off the power after closing on Friday.

What shame - they were not moving in this past weekend. I am sure the power company will gladly bend over to help these folks out after twice you question there training and quality of work.

So maybe it is just me, but it seem since I have had two buyers of places this past five or so weeks - both seem to come across as over the top.

The first buyer (of a different house) claimed a new roof was between $28,000 and 35,000. My contractor told me numbers about half that amount. I surprised the buyer when I said, he had a deal - no not on the $35,000 price discount but on me getting a new roof installed and increasing the sales price by $35,000. They didn't want that at all. In the end, I gave them about $7,000 or $8,000 discount in price.

Is anyone else noticing entitlement creeping into the buyers spectrum? It is still a sellers market here, but fall is here and soon that lake effect snow will be dropping. --24.101.xxx.xxx

Ray, I agree and that is why i list with a broker who can deal with that stuff. The buyers expect HGTV style stuff.I did a sale awhile ago and the young buyers didnt ask for anything even though they had an inspection done, i told my broker next time we have buyers like that i am going to get a home depot gift card and he can give it to them at the closing, i pre sign and dont go to closings --104.131.xxx.xx

Definitely not your job to educate them about utilities, except to specify which utility to contact if there is more than one serving your area. You're blocking their calls, right?

I'm with Ken, though - I'd let a broker deal with the stupid stuff. My folks sold a 4 acre property that they had owned since the mid 1970s back in the early 2000s. The buyers were given ample opportunity to walk the property with the broker, which they declined. The broker got a call three months later - they'd found the dump on the property that was there when my folks bought the place.

Fortunately, we had a good relationship with the broker. She did not provide my folks' new out-of-state number, and certainly didn't tell them that she had my contact info. She just confirmed with me that the dump had been there prior to 1974 and told them that their declining of the inspection of the entire 4 acres left them without recourse.

Who knows, maybe they found cool old stuff when they had the hundred plus years of dump trashed out? Caveat emptor! --173.62.xxx.xxx

I've noticed over the years that pretty much every old place in the country has a dump site on it. Back before they decided to have landfills what do you think people did with their trash?

I remember as a 6 year old we lived in the country about 30 miles out of town and I distinctly remember my father digging a pit about 15x10 feet and maybe 6 feet deep for the trash. When it got full it was covered and a new pit was dug. That's how things were done then.

It is frustrating and some are ridiculous, however, they are first time buyers. Perhaps your age and experience is causing a little less patience? --73.108.xxx.xxx

Although stupid and entitled typically go hand in hand, these people seem more stupid than entitled. I would’ve told them to call the power company and discuss it with them. --24.152.xxx.xx

Today they are learning what it is like to be Amish. Since Co-ops are membership driven, it takes a couple of business days to turn power back on.

Karma - It couldn't happen to any nicer people. --24.101.xxx.xxx

I sold one of my single family homes to a friends adult married child. I carried back a second mortgage so they wouldn't have PMI.

I got a call at 10:30, their sewer was backing up and they needed my help. I required they move their vehicle from the driveway so I could park my 1 ton van there. When I showed up they had two cars blocking the driveway to the back yard and put fire wood against the clean out, covering the auto release pressure cap.

So I called them on my cell phone and got no answer and went home..... Jerks, lazy and stupid kids.

We just sold one of our rentals. Fortunately the buyers had been renting the house so closing went well. We are selling ALL properties. as is. To avoid this petty behavior from any buyers.

You are correct. They watch too much HGTV

A house built in 1969 is not going to have perfect hardwood floors. And the old kitchen is not going to look like a new model home. BUT the price tags is considerably different! --174.196.xxx.xx
