I guess this is a stupid question, but I will ask it anyway.
Why do some places have more bathrooms than bedrooms?
Why would a 1 bedroom have 2 bathrooms, or some 4 bedrooms have six or more bathrooms?
I didn't grow up in, nor have I ever lived in a house like this, so I don't understand the reasoning. I can understand a 2/2 but not a 1/2 or 4/6. I guess some people are spoiled and like to spend lots of money in repairs.
Thank you for your time. --76.129.xxx.xx |

If you have a house with en suite bathrooms (all private for all bedrooms) then you still need a room for non-overnight-staying guests to use. Dinner guests, for instance.
Or if all your bedrooms and full bathrooms are on other floors, you need a half-bath on the main floor. --173.28.xx.xxx |

You wouldn’t want your staff to use your bathroom now would you? --149.76.xxx.x |

The bedrooms are all en suite and the extra bathroom is for houseguests.
Nothing mysterious about it. --76.178.xxx.xxx |

We took over our duplex as our full house several years ago. Now we have two bathrooms and we love it. Each is on a different floor, and if we wanted, we each could have our own bathroom. --75.11.xx.xx |

Some 1 bedrooms have a half bathroom for guest that is located in common areas like a hallway. The full bathroom would only be located with access from the bedroom and private. --172.59.xxx.xxx |

I have one house that's a one-bedroom, but it has a toilet and a sink in the closet. Then it has a full bathroom in the back of the house, off the kitchen. A lot of houses in our area were built in stages. So when the house itself was first built in 1940, it probably used an outhouse. Then at some point, they probably made a very small bathroom, even if they still used an old-fashioned non-plumbed bath. And then at a later point, they turned a porch into a bigger, more traditional bathroom, and turned another porch into a utility room.
For the most part, my 1920's-1940's houses, if they have more than one sink/toilet, evolved along those lines. They started off during the outhouse days, someone eventually brought in indoor plumbing, and then later on, someone eventually expanded the plumbing.
For my 1950's-1970's houses, if they have more than one sink/toilet, it's usually a full bath attached to the master bedroom, and then a second full bath in a hallway for the other bedrooms.
As time progressed and affluence and square footage increased, it became popular to start having powder rooms, so that your houseguests aren't messing around in your personal bathroom, looking in your medicine cabinet, pawing through your laundry, whatever. Your bathroom is perceived as personal, private space, and it's better to give someone a more neutral territory if they need to borrow your bathroom.
Then time progressed and square footage increased along with affluence. Now bathrooms were perceived as being so personal and private, you didn't share them with family members if you didn't have to--- you each had your own bathroom with your own stuff in it, and an extra one for guests. Maybe even two extra ones, if you had a combo utility room/bathroom, or a bathroom/garage or whatever.
So, it's just a shift in technology and affluence, going from "I'm grateful I don't have to go to the outhouse in a blizzard" or "Thank goodness I have a chamberpot" or "If I give my children a bath in this weather they're going to get pneumonia" to "There's a bathroom for each person, and a couple more to spare, just in case, so no one has to wait or get their stuff mixed up with someone else's stuff." --137.118.xx.xxx |

Imagine you are a family unit. Husband, Wife and Child. Also image you have over a grand parent to help with the household chores and taking care of the little brat, I mean kid.
I am 64 and sometimes can't wait to re leave myself. Not that I have medical issues! But sometimes I'm so focused on my task, I forget to take my turn on the throne. Then all of a sudden I get that urge to tinkle, drop a bomb or both. Also image someone else is taking their time and reading the New York Times. Do I go in the back yard behind a tree and do my business? Or have an extra 1/2 bath for these emergencies?
I had a client. His first wife passed away and was on his second wife with his step kids. They already had a 5 bedroom house with 2.5 bathrooms. But that wasn't enough. So I said to the guy with 30 million, can you part with 5 grand? If so, I'll build a secret bathroom in your office closet. Boom, 5 grand out of his safe into my pocket. In two days the deed was done. His 6 foot wide, but 10 feet deep closet with file cabinets was half emptied out. So in the end he had 6 feet of file cabinets and behind them a narrow toilet with a tiny sink on top of the toilet tank bolted to the wall. There was a phony file cabinets turned at a 45 degree angle with the toilet behind them.
Around 12 years later, by mistake he left the phone file cabinets open so the toilet was exposed and the closet door was left ajar with the light on. His wife went to turn off the light and found the lone secret toilet.
That evening while in bed she confronted him. So we have a another 1/2 bathroom. Nope he said. It's a 3/4 bathroom. Notice the tile on the floor, pitched with a small shower head. From that moment on he had to share his secret John with his wife.... --173.205.xxx.xx |
