A wealth tax is being proposed by the Kamala/Tim 2024 campaign as one of their main policies.
This would tax you on assets that have not yet been realized such as an extra tax on a house, furniture, jewelry, stocks, crypto, bonds, savings accounts, CDs, trusts, vehicles, recreational vehicles such as boats, RVs, ATVs, and quite possibly land. I'm pretty sure I'm leaving a lot of other assets out that they could tax as well.
JOY!

Every year the county tries to tax me on things like stoves, fridges and AC's in my places.
Every year I am under the minimum amount for the tax. Every year I have to pay the county for running the report.
In essence I am being taxed anyhow as I pay for something that I provide and get no benefit from it.
It's not much money but it does tick me off. --107.147.xx.xx |

I doubt such a practice would ever come to pass, or if it does it will be rife with exemptions and loopholes just like other taxes are today. Lefties have piles of wealth that would be impacted by this, and politicians will do anything to avoid angering their masters... err... "donors". My guess is it's a populist talking point designed to fire up the base and get votes, nothing more.
However, if that were to pass, it is one tax I would take any steps necessary not to pay. It is immoral to tax someone on gains that might not ever appear, and citizens are not obliged to obey immoral laws.
NE and I will have to commiserate.

Americans don't seem to know where their food comes from and taxing assets and not actual income would be the end of American farms.
It's not a great idea to rely upon other countries to feed us. --76.178.xxx.xxx |

Lots of fear mongering every election cycle. Not much has changed at the national level that affected my RE biz in the last few admins.
The covid eviction bans started during a certain admin and even that stealing of property rights (for the greater good?) didn't affect my small portfolio.
Good time to be selling advertisements. Anyone on here own billboards? --174.228.xxx.xxx |

Another year of the federal Liberals in Canada where they changed the capital gains from 50 per cent to 67 per cent which is going to decrease investment like what happened in California. Next year in October they are going to voted where now many ministers are retiring as do not want to on a sinking ship more than likely every by election the Progressive Conservatives win another seat. Where the Liberals lost a safe seat in Toronto which they should have held. A lot of politicians say tax the rich where most have offshore investments. It sounds great but in reality most of he election promises end the day after the election. Ever ask who is funding them where you know they can not move to the left. --216.110.xxx.xxx |

I looked and cannot find a reference to what you describe as a tax on future assets. Closest thing I found was a transactional tax on stock, bond and derivative, etc purchases and letting the bonus depreciation expire for houses. There is one bone headed idea to provide renters a credit if their rent is over 150% of the determined rate in their area. --172.59.xxx.xx |

I agree with Sid...this is so fraught with complexities that getting it to work would be extremely difficult. Let's just look at stocks alone...the government would need direct access to every stock you own at the beginning and end of each year so they could calculate how much you owe on the increases in your stocks even though you had not sold them? That is just rediculous IMO. --64.38.xxx.xxx |

Another one here that agrees with Sid. Going to be very hard to implement. Who decides what the value is currently is another problem. Very hard to state the value if it hasn't sold.
Another thing they do want that would be easier to do is rent caps and increase caps. Idk how legal that would be, but they are already doing it in some places. So, wouldn't be hard to roll that out nationwide. This one is much scarier to me. --107.207.xx.xx |

As usual, to add context...
1. This is nothing new -- it has been proposed many times in the past. It is unlikely to go through.
2. More importantly, it would apply only to the tiny group of people who have a net worth of over $100,000,000. I don't think any of us have to worry about it (except for Robert, of course).
3. It is being proposed to correct a very specific problem with taxes: that the superrich pay very little in taxes because they don't have earned income.
Again, this is another NothingBurger that you are all letting yourselves get riled up about when knowing very little about what it even is. (And how unlikely it is to even come to existence.) --107.181.xxx.x |

disregards the threshold for application. ALL taxes start low and creep up like death from a thousand cuts. the income tax is the best example. in 1913 less than 1% of the people paid 1%. the sales taxes in california are another. in 1967 the sales tax was 3% with another local add-on of 1%. now it is as much as combined 9.75% in some cities. all laws are camels noses under the tent. --75.80.xx.xx |
