What do you say to family members of former owners that want to stop by and take pictures of your rental? They are from out of state and in area for funeral of the grandmother that sold the property.
On the one hand I understand, however, my thoughts were: They are being kind of dismissive of a tenant's rights.
They asked me if anyone was living there? I said Yes.
Then they asked me if I thought they would mind? I simply replied, "I cannot speak for them". Then she (messages) says, "Oh, we thought you still owned it!"
Well, duh?
Thoughts? --216.126.xx.xxx |

You did the right thing. You rented it, it is now the tenant's home. They need HIS permission. --74.222.xxx.xxx |

Yes, they might mind. Maybe an exterior pic as I am sure the interior has changed. No one wants strangers near thier stuff. --73.230.xxx.xx |

When I was working on my house a lady and her adult son came over unannounced to visit. Her father had built the original house in '65.
I let them walk around a bit. She told me more about the place than I would have been able to guess. Also turns out she was best friends in grade school with my mother.
My grandmother used to just stop in at houses because she knew who lived there decades before. It was bothersome.
I would not allow a person in to see a place that I had rented out. If they wanted to see the inside and were decent about it I would send them my before pictures. --107.147.xx.xx |

I don't think she was talking about going inside, but I know the gentleman is away working today and his son has PTSD and is on disability and might not appreciate people taking photos of the outside even, but none of that is any of their business and I didn't feel as if I should say all that. (We are neighbors so that's how I know all that).
I'm just blown away by some people's attitudes. They don't stop to think how it might impact someone else. --216.126.xx.xxx |

I've run into this a few times as well.
So I took steps to deal with it as much as possible. What I do is as soon as I take possession I go through and take LOTS of as-is pictures, outside and inside from all angles and rooms. Pics of any remaining furniture and possessions left. When I clean out the place after the family has gotten what they want, if they ask for any of it, I store anything that might be of value plus the pictures, mementos, etc at my warehouse/storage area for a while.
If the family asks, I just give it to them and I'll give them a link to all the pictures of the place as well.
I've been thanked a few times for this plus, it gives the family some closure and pics, etc and it seems to lessen problems. --172.58.xxx.xxx |

I have a house 2 hours away from me, a rental. Same kind of thing. Former owners family members wanted to see the family house they grew up in. The former owners had died. Know if possible issues, I had them put the request in text form, then met them at the property.
Before I got there, a neighbor agreed I could change his address to mine. Mine I removed.
When the family showed up and went into the house, then they refused to move saying the sellers promised the house to them, before it was sold, 28 years ago. So the real owners, a few doors down from my house called the police. The family members had some paperwork saying they could stay there. When the police saw this was a different address, I replace the correct last numbers, the police removed them.
Then a family member found my house, by the numbers painted on the curb, covered by a parked car. When my tenant opened the door, he let it half mixed pit bull have lunch.
Issue solved. This was a long time ago... --173.205.xxx.xxx |

Let them know that you understand there need for closure. Please let them know the current tenant has PTSD, and lots of guns.........and a marksmen trophy......so stopping on by isn't a good idea, but the house is on a public street.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding, again. They are asking to drive down a public street and take a photo of a building? Why would they even ask? Of course they can. Yes, folks living they might not like it but there is nothing they can do about it.
Who takes photos? zillow, the gps guy, the municipality, your insurance, your mortgage company ... and you never know unless you see them doing it. --98.237.xxx.xx |
