Good day, I have a class C home in area that is being revitalized. Compressor went out. Thinking about doing what a Poster from NC is doing with wall AC units. Just wanted to know how are they different from window AC units, are they interchangeable, what brand is preferred and where do you buy them from? I would need 4.
Thanks,

The building envelop is going to determine how long the HVAC system will last where a well insulated building the HVAC system some days and nights will not be required as the heat stays in and out on hot days. A light colour metal roof with ridge vent will not absorb heat like asphalt shingle roofs. Spray foam in attic will reduce heat transfer and spray foam in walls. Low E argon gas windows will reduce heat transfer all year round. A high efficiency split pump will be more efficient along will last longer when used for heating and cooling. Most split units have a ten year warranty on compressor. Again a tight envelop minimal use of HVAC. A energy efficient rental unit or house the rent has to higher to cover the cost of upgrades where the tenants will benefit. The costs are amortized into rent. If install rigid board insulation on outside then stucco that will decrease heat transfer. Here some cities have net zero buildings which means no HVAC is required where solar panels are used where no need to be connected to the grid. There is HVAC system installed where as a back up. High efficiency split pumps the compressor works at a variable speed where that is determined by heat and cooling load so the compressor will last longer. --216.110.xxx.xxx |

I use Pelonis brand, bought at Menards. I have had one go out so far, tenants in that house are heavy smokers, which may have accelerated its demise. Also, the unit is not in the shade, so, it works hard.
One mistake I made when positioning mine was I put a couple of them up too high on the wall. I know I was thinking about keeping it out of reach of little kids, but a couple of my tenants are short grandmas. Also putting it a tad bit lower will make it easier when it needs replacing. The one I use weighs about 60-70lbs, so definitely a two person lift. We set it on top of my stepladder, then lift from there to get it in the wall.
Also, for my houses, all 2/1 between 650 and 780 sq feet, one story with basements, just the one A/C really isn’t enough. I tell tenants it gets them started, they can add their own window units.
Come to think of it, the one that went out so far, they haven’t added a second a/c, so the TTW A/C is taking the whole load. Probably why it went out at about 7 years.

The 18k wall units I have are not only mounted high, but they are above the washing machine.
Back when I first got these places I would replace them myself. It hurt but was doable. Now I do not even try. Had a guy last year that would swap them with me while he did the majority of the heavy lifting. I paid him $20 cash and he loved it. Too bad he became a dimwit and we no longer associate. --107.147.xx.xx |
