I'm open to suggestions.
We just spent 6!! hours on the phone with IRS.
They were fining me $2400 for 4 LLC returns WE postmarked on 3/15, the legit deadline, which they said were RECEIVED 3/25. They had not record of the postmark.
The call center can only talk about 2 on each call so 60 minutes on hold, another 60 minutes to explain and email copies, wait, wait again...for each LLC.
When the first late letters arrived we responded in writing with copies of the USPS postmark and tracking report. Waste of time. Lady said they were MONTHS behind on letters.
The local office gave us an appointment but at the appt told us they could not handle collection issues.
On the phone they wanted me to prove what was in the envelope that was tracked. Huh??
After an hour of verifying and IDs they finally accepted the tracking report as evidence and removed the fines
BUT...we still have to pay the $5.79 Interest on the FINES on each LLC. Huh??
If we had not mailed them with tracking I would have had to pay.
The only solution to avoid this in the future is to e-file which will soon be free for businesses, and/or to write on the envelope what was inside. (like somebody reads that?)
MY suggestion is the PROOF OF MAILING certificate for each envelope.
And mail each LLC separately.
BRAD

Is 3/15 a typo? I thought tax deadline was 4/15.
That said, I'm not surprised. Typical Govt "service". I paid $35 to the USPS to rekey a mailbox lock for one of my commercial properties on 6/24. They said it would probably take "about 3 days." Still not done. I've called them 3 times. "Uh yeah we're kind of backed up." --184.4.xx.xx |

We had one extension filing that sat on the floor of the IRS office for a long time before someone picked it up and decided we were late in filing it. It came back to us with footprints, in a window envelope that exposed our names AND social security numbers.I can't remember what the outcome was (we probably paid), but now, every year that we file an extension I always enclose a check (even if it is just fro a small amount). It goes to another address, and they will cash your check. I always have the postmaster stamp the envelope with the cancel stamp (it has the date), pay for the postage by credit card, AND have my hubby take a picture of the cancelled stamp and envelope. --172.59.xx.xxx |

I have been a few rounds with various government agencies myself. Usually correspondence crosses in the mail. Wait time is crazy and one agent will say one thing and another something else. I just kept sending in docs. I had to learn to take a pic at the post office with date stamped. I had one say it had to be RECEIVED by 4/15. You try to play nice. --73.230.xxx.xx |

Last year I had a nice check sent back to me and they said it was an overpayment. Hmm. I sent a picture of it to my accountant and had him in look into it. He didn’t expect it to come back either and he checked on it and said it was a legit overpayment. He said to give it a month or two to see if anything else shows up regarding the check, and if not to just put it back into the business. Well come to find out this year, they sent it back to me as a mistake and I owe it to them again, but unexpectedly this time. That’s always fun. --24.152.xxx.xx |

Whenever we send something that has a deadline, we use USPS Certificate of Mailing.
Have clerk stamp it in front of us, then take pictures of both sides of envelope and send picture to our email for safe keeping.
Simple and less expensive than USPS Certified Mail --192.129.xxx.xxx |

When filed taxes started early where when documents came from government was able to file well before the end of April where the accountant filed return online. Here tax accountants file most tax returns online. In January added up all the expenses so will on time. Accountants are really busy at end of April as many wait until last minute to file taxes. If everything is organized and added up then it takes less time to prepare tax return so will cost less. --216.110.xxx.xxx |

I lean extensively on my Congressman's office when dealing with Governmental nonsense. They generally can get to the bottom of the issue within a month and get it straightened out. Bureaucrats hate it when a Congressman's office gets up in their business, the tend to get it fixed to make the pain stop.
Of course I have supported his campaign with a contribution a time or two so I'm on his good side. --209.205.xxx.xx |

LLC tax return deadline is 3/15.
I like using paper because it is physical, not lost in cyberspace. Paper does not disappear.
Accountant said e-file was going to cost several hundred $$.
IRS lady said it's now free for individuals and soon to be free for businesses, like LLCs.
So maybe we'll be using e-file.
In the future we will create the mailing label on the envelope and take a photo of the return next to the label and Certificate of Mailing before inserting and sealing the envelope.
In my case the Certified Mail return postcard only proves when they PROCESSED it, not the postmark which was the whole reason for the fines. In my case IRS records showed RECEIVED 10 days after postmark, thus triggering the fines.
Small note: tracking shows the envelope was in Kansas City the day after we mailed it. It bounced around and sat in KC for 9 days.

The City got grants from the State, and the State got the funds from the Feds. Money as a program to pay back landlords who didn't receive rent during 1 year of the Pandemic. The Stupid Government gave the money, $15,000, directly to the tenant, and the tenant had to turn over those funds to their landlord, within 15 days.
I never got those funds and reported this to the State of California, Franchise Tax Board, The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) AND the City of Los Angeles Housing Department.
The Tax People kept on sending me bills for taxes I should have paid after receiving this "Grant" Rent Money. I wrote back using their provided forms, Sent Emails, Text Messages and spent days on the telephone.
They fines for not paying taxes on money never received went to 400% (Four Hundred Percent). The 1-800 call centers for the State weren't set up for 5 months so no message could be left. Had to rely one snail mail with a postage stamp and tracking number as proof of service.
So one day the State Stolen money out of an account, the tax money not owed plus 400% fine. The Feds Tried the same trick, but them I could stop, but not my State. Close to 200 grand. They refuse to give back the money, saying I have to sue my tenants for the grant money they kept. Not my job.
SO now when I file my state taxes, I include the I.O.U from my tenant and a letter saying F.U. guys. --173.205.xxx.xx |

Brad, I unaware of CPAs charging more for e-filing. If anything, the reverse is true. It takes far more time, effort and cost to print the documents not to mention this exact situation where additional time and cost is incurred to prove it got timely filed. We e-file everything for this very reason and if your guy is charging hundreds extra for something about to be mandated, you need to negotiate a different arrangement or get someone else --209.122.xx.xxx |

Sounds like you did everything correctly. Our USPS is terrible at service. I sent a $5,000 check as a deposit on a new car to a dealership in New Hampshire...a week later they said they had not received it. I nearly lost the allocation on the rare car because of this. I filed a claim, cancelled the check, and sent another one. I had tracking on both of them. The first one made it to Pittsburgh but then there was no record of it after that. I got my money back on the first one after filing a claim, but that wasn't easy.
Maybe take a photo of your watch or wife's phone showing the date at the USPS counter or the blue mailbox? Not sure what more you can do. --64.38.xxx.xxx |
