My Auntie, who is a bit of a worry wart, lives down the street from a deep lot that has three houses on it. The houses are in various states of disrepair, & Auntie knows one of the houses doesn’t even have heat. The property has broken down cars in and outside the garages, dried up weeds are all over the place & are a fire hazard Rats are everywhere. It’s like one of those episodes on “Hoarders.” Auntie would like to give a heads up to the city about the state of this property, but isn’t sure what department. I figured I would post here and see if anyone knew. TIA

Code enforcement handles that in my area. That department is under the umbrella of Urban Planning and Development. We have a website you can report complaints on. Might google your city offices and see if they have one too.
Are the houses anywhere that would be a good location? Might be some deals to scoop up there.

Why don’t you lowball the owner, clean them out and cut the grass and flip them as handy man specials? --174.249.xx.xxx |

Good suggestions and thanks for the info. Auntie just found out that the title is not clear and that there was bigamy, fraud, and most likely elder abuse involved, so the title is suspect. My nickname for my Auntie is now Auntie Sherlock. --99.117.xxx.xx |

What would those have to do with the title? --24.152.xxx.xx |

Since one can see how bad the property is currently from the street and any one of 20 departments would love to slap a fine on the owner, then it's obvious to me this property is probably owned by the City of Los Angeles Housing Department, under on of it's LLC's.
Just last month I was "ordered" to paint one of my properties within 10 days, or the City would fine me $1,500 PER MONTH.
In the mean time, the property next to my building is a City owned property in disrepair. The workers on that building during this heat wave were given "paid vacation time off", until the weather goes from the current 90-107, down to under 82. I have to work in the heat or get in trouble. --45.32.xx.xxx |

In LA you might find that rats got rights. Considering what Robert J says about how things work there, why not see if you can get an option to buy the place for a low option price then flip the option to an investor. At least with only an option you might not be liable for things. --172.58.xxx.xx |

I buy lots of houses and search the title before i go see a house so i know what direction to take negotiations. If you are interested dont listen to your grandmother concerning title issues, very few people even understand what attaches to a house and what doesnt. These are definately worth pursuing and if you dont know how to look at a title hire a pro --74.77.xx.xx |

Sounds like a long term master lease opportunity with an option to purchase. --24.101.xxx.xxx |

Auntie Sherlock found out the old man who owned the property was sickly & the married woman made her move as so helpful, so caring. He did have family members but the bigamist woman finagled him into marrying her so she would get his property transferred to her as his “widow” but she was still married to someone else (no idea where her first husband is but with the old man who owns the property is at death’s door, it’s likely the real husband doesn’t know anything about it). The takeaway is this: if you want to know something, take your cute little weenie-doodle-Pomeranian dog on a walk when neighbors are in their yard or cooling off on the front porch. People love to chat! Yes, that’s Auntie Sherlock & even if part of the story is true, it’s a doozy! --99.117.xxx.xx |
