The best defense is simply never to click on anything that looks suspicious. Maleware/spam can get around even the toughest blockers, so ultimately the best defense is yourself. Looks for obvious signs like misspelled words, phrases meant to create a system of urgency, addresses that aren't correct (MrLadnL0rd.com instead of MrLandLord.com), for example), people asking you for personal, private, passwords, login ids, or financial information. 99% of those are frauds. Probably 99.99%

And if in doubt, always contact the person or business yourself using a method you already have used in the past: phone call or personal email using the address saved in your Contacts list.

My dear MIL has all kinds of blockers and virus scanners on her machine. She still gets nailed every so often b/c she'll download "free" stuff from online. Ouch! When you click it, you're telling the software, "this is okay." and you've given up the protection the blocker offers.

In short, the blocker is only as good as the user.

Sid's advice is sound, be aware of the phone number, I had this recently.

Someone sent me an invoice through paypal. Got the email from paypal and sure enough there was an invoice. As I looked at it, there was a number beside the message that said "If you don't recognize this invoice call this number" the only problem is that the number listed was on the invoice not on the paypal screen itself. I had just read about this scam recently and sure enough I got it. So, be sure you are calling a number you know to be valid, if it's on the email (or in this case the invoice) its a scam. --209.205.xxx.xx

Delete any sham emails immediately. I using a Linux operating system along with Thunderbird email where I can block emails from offshore scams. Once set up a lot of those emails never receive. Also go into You Tube on how to block foreign offshore scam emails. I only one computer with Windows 10 where other computers are Imac or Linux operating system computers where do not have obsolete a good computer with good hardware. I on and off get scam calls from India where they start to act as a bank or amazon. It is possible to run a reverse look up of phone number where if the phone number is spoofed there no person or business. A lot of times if call back then no connection. Unlike North America where those scams would shut down in few hours the third world countries the police are paid off. --207.236.xxx.xxx

Ray, the one from me was real... honest.

You need to pay it fast as the interest and late fees are massive.

Just remember that every time you turn off your computer it is thanks to me that the button works to turn it back on.

You are most welcome! --107.147.xx.xx

Hollis, do as NE said for your email program, plus run a malware scan on your computer. Just dont download a free program, lol. Go to haveibeenpawned. Com/passwords to confirm if your pw has been compromised.

Also, if others receive spam emails from your email address, you need to ask them to send them to you so you can examine the headers. Do they really come from you? Anyone can send an email from any made up domain. That doesn't necessarily mean that it comes from you.

But yes, do as Small Potatoes says and change your password just to be safe. --108.69.xxx.xxx

Thanks for the smile Zero. That made my day.

The scam bill I got didn't have my name - instead it had my email address.
