Poor mindset (by Ken [NY]) Posted on: Jun 22, 2024 3:27 PM

Using my example of the family i am buying a house from on 2 earlier posts. Why would 3 siblings just walk away from the mothers house and not attempt to sell it? I actually think some people are scared of actually having money,in this case if they did a little effort i think 3 siblings could be splitting $90000. The sister i am dealing with is not stupid, she should be able to deal with this. She did appear to have a poor mindset by comments she made, would they feel like they wouldnt fit in with there friends if she all of a sudden had a check for $30000? --74.77.xx.xx

I used to drive myself nuts trying to figure these things out. Sometimes I still do. One thing Iíve been able to do a little easier the last few years is simply say ďwho cares?Ē. In your case, the kids could be fighting. Or they think thereís a will leaving everything to just one or 2 wonít agree just to spite the 3rd. Maybe they think itís worth WAY MORE than what you want to buy it for. Or way less. Who knows. I know one guy for example who has ZERO money. Paycheck to paycheck. But he has a TON of doodads that he doesnít use and could very easily sell. Problem is, he wonít sell anything unless he gets top dollar for it. So it sits and he stays broke. So, I resort to asking who cares when it comes to what makes people do what they do. Yes itís definitely mindset. Maybe laziness. They could be busy. Who knows. --24.152.xxx.xx

Seems that when dealing with things like this that the family just can't work too well with each other. My mother really needs to sell her house, but she refuses to accept the fact that Medicaid has some say and claim in that. My sister seems to not really care and will not communicate but yet she is to inherit everything from my understanding, that is, unless Medicaid forces sell of the house. On the other hand, I wish I could get communication, and I wish that my mother would realize that it is only right that the state has claim, considering they are paying for her care. So, it may not be as much the money as it is "family matters". Does that make since?

Also, I have also been having difficulty finding any real answers. It is as if it is a secret and all you can get are very vague answers. --76.129.xxx.xx

And, those vague answers come from the state and family.

After a while, people get tired or burnt out dealing with both sides. So even if a family member were to get enough answers from the state, they still have to deal with the family that doesn't work together. --76.129.xxx.xx

Another thing, Ken, when I say getting vague answers from the state, I am referring to getting answers as to how everything plays out when the person dies. The money owed to the state would be easy for the family to find out. They can get the nursing facility to get those numbers. I don't believe the family would feel like they don't fit in if they had some money either. It partly has to do with the fact that there may be no money left for the family after the state takes their part. So, you have a few things going on here. Family may not be communicating well, there will be little to no money for the family, not knowing the exact way things play out, until they do, how any will may be dispersing things, ect. To me, the poor mindset would make them want more money, not be ashamed to have it. The religious poor speak of greed and the love of money and how they are sinful, but when the curtains are drawn back..... --76.129.xxx.xx

Yo, 6 er.

None of your other friends want to correct you.

Sense, rather than since.

Does that make sense ? --69.130.xxx.xxx

Something like a Medicaid claim can be daunting .... all you hear is nursing homes run 10-12k PER MONTH. So why ask for the real number? Just walk away with a few K.

Your results may vary! --198.168.xx.xxx

That makes sense. When claims against the estate exceed the value of assets, what can you do but walk away? --107.141.xx.xxx

Look up the ABC (antecedent, behavior, consequence) model. It will give you good insight into why people do what they do.

In short people under stress are drawn to outcomes that are sooner VS later and sure VS unsure.

Everything from corporate safety programs to child development programs are built on the premise of this model.

So in this situation, the family is stressed, they don't know what to do or how to do it. You have given them a solution that resolves the situation SOON and they are SURE that this avenue will take the stress away.

To do it themselves would result in them being UNSURE of what to do and it will be LATER when the get it resolved (meaning being under stress for a longer period).

So, you get a deal and they get less stress. --209.205.xxx.xx

I do not understand people walking away from a potential deal either. I get it that some just don't want the drama.

I was selling a duplex to a guy that does a lot of work for other landlords. 12 year note, I played bank, 10% interest and a down payment.

Six years into it he decided he was done. Signed it all back to me. Lost everything he had invested into it.

I met with one side and signed a new lease, same terms. The other side was leaving because she didn't like the managers. I got another family in there at a higher rent.

Within two weeks I had a deal set up with another investor. Got a down payment from him, he switched insurance over, paid the property taxes and made monthly payments (at a loss to him) until it was paid off this last May.

Why didn't the first guy ask one of the investors he worked for if they had an interest? Instead he just walked. Makes no sense to me.

That does remind me that I need to get the quit claim notarized and sent over to the new buyer so the property is moved out of my name. --107.147.xx.xx

Talking to another LL ... he and his wife had made a killing buying during the S&L crisis. Now they were DONE ... down to their last 2 houses in the hood. But there was little/no interest from buyers.

Finally a young buck submits an offer on one house. The LL says to him "Have you ever walked into the grocery store and see a 'buy one get one sale'?" "Well this is the 'buy one get one sale' ... I'll take your offer and if you can close it, i'll DEED you the other house too."

They simply wanted OUT! --198.168.xx.xxx
