Wife and I decided to vacation to an area of the country we haven't been too before. I threw the dart and it landed on the finger lakes area of New York. We're considering a triangle from Buffalo, Montreal, to Albany. Found a couple of state parks to have some waterfalls. What other must see's, must eats, and must stay places are there in that neck of the woods. --209.205.xxx.xx

Watkins Glen racetrack is in the finger lakes region if you like car racing. If you wind up in Oneonta Brooks BBQ or if you happen to see them at a charity event worth getting a meal there. --74.77.xx.xx

I've done the tour of the New York State Capitol building twice. The architecture is amazing, if you like that sort of thing. Also recommend Fort William Henry. Haven't seen Fort Ticonderoga yet, but it's on my list. --107.141.xx.xxx

Plenty

Yes we'll be flying. I've spent a lot of time in the St Louis area, visiting family at the VA medical center in Jefferson Barracks. Been to St. Charles, through the Arch, the Fabulous Fox theatre, down to Bonne Terre, Over to Hermann, and up to Hannibal. Those last 2 are some of my favorite communities. I grew up in a small community on the KC side of the state from you. --209.205.xxx.xx

Here are some ideas,..I've been to most of them

but one of my favorite things is driving thru the high peaks of the Adirondacks,...I don't know what it is,,but we have several ranges un the northeast, the Catskills , the White Mts where on top of Mt Washington which registered maybe the worst weather in the world (but generally a nice drive to the top in the Summer and a cog railway to the top)

but there is something about the high peaks of the Adirondacks that has an energy that recharges my body,

the other places,.

Jamestown NY is home to the National Comedy Museum. It has the Lucile Ball Museum and her grave site too (which is shaped like the shapes used at the end of her shows).

Near by is Chautauqua Lake

I go to the Adirondacks for a week every summer. Hike out to a lake, sit on a rock by the shore, and you will see absolutely zero signs of humanity. No houses in the distance, no cars passing by - nothing. The view hasn’t changed in 1,000 years. Looks the same now as it did before Columbus arrived. Stay overnight to listen to the call of the loon as dusk settles in. It is a downright spiritual journey for me. --108.52.xxx.xxx

Mat,I've done similar, Two of my favorites are Spruce Lake and West Canada Lake North of Piseco lake,..I have been there at one of the 3 leantos that the state put in 30 years ago,..and in the mid Summer season spent 5 days and saw one one else on the whole lake...

Which lake were you at?

I think there is some kind of magical energy in the Adirondacks. --73.126.xx.xxx

Hollis,MAT- back in about 1998 mothers day weekend i flew from long lake about 15 minutes to a decent size lake with no access other than a float plane with a friend and we were the only ones there for about 4 days, we caught a couple nice trout and some panfish. lot of fun --74.77.xx.xx

Ken,..I don't know if they still do this, but the state used to stock trout at hard to access lakes by dropping them by plane.

I was surprised that they also supplied Spruce lake with a basic aluminum boat,..it looked that it was little used. There are a number of lakes that its said never sees a human all year.

I rember flying over the Adirondacks and it seemed that were about as much water as land. --73.126.xx.xxx

Thanks everyone, I have been looking up and reading about your suggestions. More places to see than we can fit into a week. What's funny is I guess I have been in Texas too long, I was laying out the route for the week and I thought the scale was off, all those places are within a space the size of the Texas panhandle where I live. I have to drive 100 miles just to see a windmill around here. Most of these places are just a short drive apart. --209.205.xxx.xx

Getting into the Adirondacks is heart-lifting. We camp at Piseco Lake every August. Hollis, MAT - hiking to West Canada Lake was something we could have done 10 years ago (before we began going regularly), but as we age we have to be content with easier hikes. MikeA - Piseco Lake is in the lower Adirondacks. There is a shortish, but fairly strenuous hike to Panther Mt. on the west side of the lake. You arrive at a rocky cliff area overlooking the lake. On a clear day, the view north and east of the mountains is wonderful.

MikeA - the Adirondacks is a huge region - you might want to consider hitting that area another year, which will allow you time to research and to get decent accommodations. But the NYS Finger Lakes region has plenty to do and see - Watkins Glen is wonderful for the waterfalls. A fun and quirky rainy day stop is the Cornell Ornithology Lab. They have some interactive displays that make you appreciate birds in ways you never anticipated. Further south - Corning's Museum of Glass is very well done. Our favorite part is the glass-blowing demonstration area. --108.36.xx.xxx
