State Specific Question About: NEW HAMPSHIRE (NH)

I am replacing an old privacy fence and was wondering if the neighbors should pay 50% of the cost or should I pay for it? --172.56.xxx.xx

Do you have a survey plat map that shows where it is located in reference to the true property line?

You can always ask, even if it is yours - if they may be benefitting from it being there, too. Like if they have a dog or young children, or just like more privacy.

You could start with: I just wanted t let you know I'll be taking this old, rickety fence down later the month, so there will be some noise & people working. We'll be as quiet and neat as possible. The workers may need to step on your side to accomplish the work, OK?

At this point they may ask if you aren't putting up a new one.

You: I looked into it, but not sure it's in the budget right now.

Now, they may offer to help with the cost to replace it, rather than remove it. Always best if it is THEIR idea.

Don't be afraid to let the thought sit with them for a couple days while they discuss their privacy and finances with the spouse. --68.229.xxx.xxx

I had a neighbor that complained constantly about my dilapidated, but sturdy, wooden fence. I told her it wasn't in the budget, but asked if she wanted to split the cost of a new one, since almost half of it was on the line between our two properties. Nope, not interested.

Eventually, someone reported it to the Department of Nazi Services and I got an order to remove or replace it. So I removed it. Now there was nothing to keep her two little ankle-biters from running across my yard into the street. After about two months, she put up a beautiful fence between our two yards.

With almost half of the fence "replaced" at that point, I was able to replace the rest for a much less cost. Overall it would probably have been cheaper if she'd cooperated, but at least I didn't have to pay for her half! --104.230.xxx.xxx
