Insulate Interior Walls? (by OREO [WI]) Posted on: Apr 20, 2024 11:48 AM

Our "mold unit" going forward recap: room with 3 outside walls, open outdoor porch above. Progress: new rubber porch floor believed to be water tight. "Mold" room below, all room was plaster walls/ceiling removed.

Mold found in insulation, rafters, studs of ceiling/walls, EXCEPT the interior common walls, adjacent to heated room. There was no insulation in that wall, including the closet adjacent to a closet in the heated room. The studs and back of the adjacent room drywall had no visible mold on them. This leads me to think those walls should not be insulated going forward. Does it make sense to insulate those walls to avoid future mold growth?

After mold remediation & testing occurs, we planned outside walls/ceiling ONLY to be insulated. What say you oh group in the know?

Unless the room is occupied in the future, I suspect the room will not be heated. The last two sets of tenants had not heated it.

So maybe tenants did heat that room or allowed house hold heat to go in. Warm air carries moisture toward the cold outside wall and condenses right there --173.61.xxx.xxx

In the house have the same problem where over time slowly breaking out walls and using spray foam for ceiling. Fiber glass is organic where in the walls it sags then there are air pockets then condensation as air space has little insulation value. Before breaking out wall in front main bedroom it was - 20 Degrees Celsius where the wall was at 0 degrees Celsius where the interior wall was at freezing temperature where water will freeze. Broke out all the drywall than wipe down all the studs and back then let dry than with the two can DIY spray foam applied spray foam between all studs then applied bubble wrap insulation over studs where than applied tape so the wall is completely air tight. Now the windows have the most heat transfer. In the EU fiber glass insulation is banned where forever mold problems. Better for once and for all get rid of the moldy fiber glass organic insulation than the mold is out. The humidity level in house is 35 per cent. Where a mask, gloves to remove fiber glass insulation. Another option is to install vapour barriers than install Roxul batt insulation where Roxul does not sag or causes mold. Spray foam is more expensive where less heat transfer than is completely air tight no vapour barrier. On You Tube there are videos on how to use the DIY two insulation products where need gloves, special mask, safety glasses, hazmat suit and hat. Apply one inch than after another inch when insulation hardens. I am slowly seeing the different with spray foam insulation in the house where less heat transfer all year round along with less noise transfer. I am surprised they still sell the fiber glass insulation here as it not accepted in a Canadian landfill. I took 8 large bags to the GFL transfer station today where it is shipped to the landfill in Ann Arbour Michigan. So in the anything organic will have mold. Better to get rid of mold if renting or selling property. --207.236.xxx.xxx

ROBERT: Thank you for your insight. In looking up your ideas, we feel the Roxul batt insulation will work best for our install. We like that the insulation value will be more and that it is mold and fire resistant.

Your spray foam idea was interesting until I realized it would exacerbate the current tenant's respiratory issues and mine when my husband and I eventually move into the home.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you, but will be glad you made your place warmer with new and mold proof insulation. --75.11.xx.xx

Roxul is a great choice. I'm not understanding the layout. Insulate interior wall is it helps w noise between units. --172.59.xxx.xxx

Spray foam smells for few days then goes away. Adding a layer of bubble wrap then sealing with tape for a completely air tight wall. With Roxul adding bubble wrap or plastic air barrier is required as Roxul Batt is not completely air tight. Roxul batt does not sag where a constant insulation value along with fire proof. It is made from rock slag from steel mills. Again check out videos on You Tube on how to install Roxul batt where will need good mask gloves as avoid breathing fibers. Batt must be carefully cut not to compress or allow any air space between the studs. A 1/2” or 1” layer of solid board insulation will increase R value. In the meantime going to continue to gradually take out the moldy fiber glass insulation then spray foam along with install rafter vents then seal up with thin sheets of plywood then once all the attic is spray foamed will add plywood then add more insulation with combination of Roxul batt and solid board insulation where the attic will be same as room temperature all year round where the house has no AC. Last summer it was hot for few hours in the afternoon where at night opened windows then used ceiling fans. Having a metal roof with a ridge vent is much cooler than a asphalt shingle roof. Asphalt shingles are another landfill product.

Insulation is used for temp transfer, vapor barrier would help control moisture, they can be installed independently. --184.59.xxx.xx

I have been told that it could also control some level of sound in interior walls. Do I have any proof? nope --24.101.xxx.xxx

Roxul sound batt will minimize sound transfer along isolating drywall. Also can be used for a 1 hour fire rating wall if special fire resistant drywall is installed. Spray foam is much better seal if no fire rating is required. I can be the difference in sound since adding more and more spray foam insulation. --207.236.xxx.xxx

When I built my place I insulated every interior wall and used solid core doors.

I did this for sound dampening.

I did not take into account that I have no carpet in the place at all.

Sound seems to roll across the floor and into the rooms as if the walls were not there.

It was an expensive learning experience for sure. --107.147.xx.xx
