Security camera for units (by Leon [CA]) Posted on: Apr 16, 2024 8:22 PM

Ok I will have a unit duplex that I will be updating soon.

I was planning on placing a router in the attic for 2 reasons. 1 to provide data to security camera and 2. Provide wifi access on a separate network to tenant for a cheaper rate. Example would be charge $30 and if both units go for it internet is paid for.

Question for those out there. Have you done this before and what camera do you recommend.

I currently do not have any other neutral area to mount the router and or hub. If I put in one u it then one person will have access to everything or will take up space.

I have looked into arlo ultra 2 and Google nest.

I like that both are wireless.

Arlo subscription is $200/year

Google subscription is $120/year but gives more features.

Arlo you need to use the base station hub.

Will place camera around the parameter. Approx 5 camera. The back lot is being rented for storage space for a contractor. --166.205.xxx.xx

I'm not familiar with either Arlo or google systems, so I can't help you there.

But, on another note: why not just include internet in the rent? Simpler, and you know they will be paying for it. --68.229.xxx.xxx

Bear in mind, electronics do not do well in non temp regulated areas. I keep electronics in temps of 56 to 74 degrees F and routinely go through routers every year. --64.246.xxx.xx

Leon - as Maple said. An attic in the south will cook a consumer grade 'router'. --135.134.xx.xxx

I do this for all of my student tenants and it's nice selling feature included in the rent. I'd recommend centrally locating the router, so both apartments get wifi and your cameras have a good wifi signal. I know others have talked about liability if your tenants do bad things on like, but I've been doing it for years and never had a problem. If you do provide wifi, you will be the guy your tenants are calling when it stops working :-) I use Ring's doorbells, motion sensing lights and cameras and they have been reliable. You can also use the internet for things like thermostats and keypad locks, if you own the router. I'd suggest getting your own router and not the one the internet company provides --173.63.xxx.xx

I use Wyze cameras. Quality is excellent, interface is easy to use, and they're cheap. I think my last three-pack on Amazon was $75. Monthly plans (which store your videos for 2 weeks) vary, but right now it includes all your cameras for $9.99/mo. I have cameras at three different rooming houses, and you can't beat that price. They've been very helpful in identifying unauthorized occupants and who left their dirty dishes in the sink. :) --104.230.xxx.xxx

Another possible problem with having the router in the attic is access to it.

What happens when you have to reboot the thing? Easy access to the attic? If one tenant has access to the attic then you have the same problem with them turning off access to the other side or even you. --107.147.xx.xx

I wouldn't provide a router for tenant access in C class or below. "Why are my speeds to www.cookmethsupplies.com so slow?"

Yeah, no. Could do without the hassle. Student housing is a different story.

THAT being said, one of my more incompetent co-workers wanted to know if there was anything to increase speeds at her daughter's dorm where EVERYONE was jumping on the free wifi. --64.246.xxx.xx

Couldn't placing a camera on a SFH be considered a breach of privacy? --24.115.xx.xxx

Mike, I don't think so as long as everyone is made aware that the camera is there.

Exceptions being in the person's bedroom and the bathroom.

That being said I don't want to have a camera inside the inhabited place. If I am that worried about what my tenant is doing I need to get a different tenant.

I have often considered getting some cameras for outside my multis. Could help keep the he said she said bs down a bit. --107.147.xx.xx

If you're going to supply the Internet, be sure to monitor it. And there's no way I'd supply both electricity AND internet to my tenants. If I did, they'd all be running up my electricity bill mining crypto coins. --108.69.xxx.xxx

That was my first inclination, the router won’t survive that heat. But like Brad charging a $35 sewer charge for his houses with septic tanks, I would charge this as a non-optional amenity because they’re going to be paying for internet anyways. Make them pay YOU for it. --73.152.xx.xxx
