I had an applicant fill out my pre-screener today that just made me laugh. She’s been in her current residence for 2 and a half MONTHS now. Reason for moving? “Owner is going to renovate”. Hmm? After you JUST moved in???

Let’s look a bit further: number of animals-8. Really?! One pit bull, two pit bull-mastiffs, and five cats. I can’t imagine why that owner has to renovate! I can’t imagine wasting one second of my life communicating with this person. No, instead she received an instantaneous automated ”thanks but no thanks” email.

The best part was her reply: “They said I’m rejected because of my pets. It’s not fair! My pets are all I have left of my husband! And I’ve had Snowball and Khufu literally since the day they were born! I won’t get of them, I WON’T and I CAN’T!”

I was thinking this was one hundred percent a joke, until I looked her up on Facebook. Nope she was completely serious.

That’s just nuts. I have to restrain myself and not laugh at these nutty people. So many people are 100% responsible for creating their own struggles and difficulties in life. Just leaves you shaking your head. She obviously values having multiple pets over having a roof over her head. --24.236.xx.xx

If she has money, someone will take her. Or else she will learn how to declare them all service animals.

Many tenants are tenants because they can't figure out how the world works.

I have some sympathy, though. I had to pass up on a perfect house for myself because their HOA did not allow enough dogs and would not give me an exception. I suppose it is slightly different because I have a lot of options to purchase and I am not a tenant who can' afford much and can't find a rental that will take my pets. Still, I would not give up my dogs in order to get a house. --76.178.xxx.xxx

I can't imagine the smell in the car,

OH yes I can, in my younger days I used to go to the outer banks for spring break - my girl and I slept in the car, the ugly 1964 Citroen D19, the seats went flat and we parked on the sand but night after night the stinky ocean sand would blow thru the window gaps leaving a smell we had to bring home to vacuum a couple times or more to clear out. Her brother tried tying the window cranks shut with fishing lines but we still ended up bring home that smell, ew-that smell, remember the song. --184.59.xxx.xx

I don’t have any problem at all telling them specifically why they were rejected. None of the animals were called out as one of the protected classes, so they were fair game

“Hello and thank you for your recent inquiry. Unfortunately the number of animals that you have is more than the owner of this property will allow.

However we wish you the best of luck in your search!”

I have a LONG list of different rejection emails that are automatically sent. --172.58.xxx.xx

Jason,

Wondering how she came to adopt all those animals. I pity the LLs who had to deal with her as her hoard grew.

AND...that LL did not do his 2 Minute In Home Visit! before giving her the keys.

Animals is one of the 5 types of hoarding named by the psych people. My max was 28 cats in a studio apt. My farm raised handyman ran out gagging from the stench.

wow... yeah. When I do "allow" pets I have to put in that there is a pet LIMIT... my gosh... why do you need so many?

I get it, if you like dogs (or cats, etc) you want one and don't want to get rid of it, etc... it is (and should be) part of your family. BUT... there is such a thing as too much.

I don't care if you even OWN your own home or property... 8 is too much in my opinion. It's not even fair or right for the animals. --74.79.xx.xxx

For a short time about 20 years ago (good lord) we had three dogs and a cat. Then the old dog died, so we had two dogs and a cat. Cat died. Got a kitten from the local cement factory. Then DH also found an abandoned cat at a rental so we had two dogs and two cats. Eventually both dogs died so we just had the two cats. DH found another cat at another acquisition so then we had three cats. Two cats died (not at the same time!) so we are down to one. BUT the kids all have dogs so when family visits, four dogs...

We won't get another animal until the cat dies - he has FIV so could be tomorrow, could be ten years - then we'll go for a pair of bonded young cats. No more dogs for us anytime soon. --173.28.xx.xxx

May I pet the animals?

I especially like the big doggies.

This is a time where it may be easier to rent to the animals instead of the human.
