I'm seeing lots of reports online about people being scammed out of their money thru Zelle.

It's not Zelle's doing, it's scammers gaining access to our accounts when we have the Zelle app, EVEN IF WE DON'T USE THE APP.

Houston TV news reported that 192,878 Zelle fraud cases were REPORTED nationwide in 2022, totaling $213 million. (How many were NOT reported??)

Only 3500 of those 192,878 cases were settled or refunded.

Zelle is owned by 7 large banks (BOA, Chase, Wells Fargo, Capital One, PNC, US Bank, USAA)

Experts are saying Zelle does not have enough safety protocols in place.

A common scam is when someone asks you to do a REVERSE TRANSACTION to correct a problem. POOF! Your account is emptied.

My amateur advice: close your Zelle account and delete the app. It has proven to be unsafe. The banks are firm- it's YOUR fault we leaked info online or responded to a scammer - no refunds.

We're using Venmo for incoming rent only, nothing outgoing. Not seeing news reports about people being scammed (this week:). The money goes to our deposit only account at the bank which Wifey transfers out every day. The most they could get (theoretically) is someone's weekly rent of $278.

Nothing is safe in reality. I get probably 5 phishing emails a week to DH's work domain (fake invoices, etc)

You just have to be paying close attention and cannot mindlessly click on things. --216.182.xxx.xxx

Scams happen. People have been scammed out of their money since money began. If there is money changing hands, someone is trying to intercept it.

Don't answer the phone, because scams abound there. Don't write a check, it could be stolen and your account number hacked. Don't sign up for Autopay, they could take too much. Don't carry cash you could be robbed. etc etc etc etc

I have a friend who works fraud at a local bank in PA. People don't read, don't research, don't pay attention, click the button before reading...it's not the app's fault - it's the user's 99% of the time, which is why only 3500 out of 193,000 were reversed. Were they scammed? Yes. Did they allow the scam? Usually, also yes.

Then they blame the app / the bank / the internet in general instead of themselves.

The number one password in use is something like password123. --173.28.xx.xxx

I was just looking into Zelle because of a guy I bought some stuff from wanting paid that way.

Then I read thru a couple new posts about Venmo.

I had a bad feel for Zelle for the most part.

Now it seems I was correct with that feeling. --107.147.xx.xx

Many credit unions and banks offer Zelle services and there is no clawback function. I have one tenant who pays via Zelle so ultimately it comes down to the users and the host bank.

Yes there is a separate mobile app but most people use Zelle via their bank's app if available. --216.182.xxx.xxx

I use Zelle via the Chase bank app. Safer? IDK. Just a red flag if they request $$ to reverse a transaction. Been using it for like 4 yrs now... zero real issues. Biggest has been the $ per day limit (typically a 1000). I would actually prefer Zelle over Venmo. --170.203.xxx.xxx

The main difference between venmo and zelle is you "sent" money using only a phone number .... not some wonky venmo user name that could be anybody.

BOA is implementing SOME security. I tried to zelle a family member last night and was told the transaction was declined because a similar transaction was sent a couple days earlier.

It's a start --198.168.xx.xxx

If you use Zelle through your bank you have more protection if you are sending money - at least they question and warn you along the way even if you are sending to your list of already-established people. BUT there is still no clawback, so a tenant couldn't get their money back once sent by claiming fraud or whatever.

Venom and Cash App both act more like PayPal: if someone says OOPS I sent it by mistake, they can step in and grab it back from the sender. So you really have to watch the person you are sending it to - users names can be very similar. "William XYZ" might be your local lawn guy, and "William XZY" is someone in California. Choosing him is not fraud and him receiving the money is not a crime. But you are out the money. --173.28.xx.xxx

Yeah I don't get the money requests to send or receive? Is that a thing?

It can happen anytime though - I received some money in my self-directed IRA account from someone else's tenants. They were using ETC's online payment portal and must have put in the wrong account number - although it was two different people so I'm assuming the account owner gave THEM the wrong info. I contacted ETC and they moved the money out but they were totally confused too - I mean how do they know which account the tenants WANTED to pay if they had the wrong info? I'm assuming the account owner finally contacted them, I really don't know. --173.28.xx.xxx

Zelle seems easier and doesn't care if you are a biz?

Venmo seems to have more users but if they catch you doing biz they ding you hard?

I set up a venmo account not being a business account. Collected a bunch of rent $$ via it, still haven't been charged a %. Is it right? Probably not. The day Venmo starts charging a %, I'm adding it to my renters fees if they use that service (just like the govt adds the credit card % if you use a CC)

Me, I like Zelle better overall. I pay a few of my contractors via Zelle. They like it. Get paid fast and no wait from the postal service (or lost check). --170.203.xxx.xxx

I am odd man out, on this board and with a large portion of society. I don't use any of the money transfer apps. I can pay with cash, check or credit card. I receive with cash or check. I have no idea why anyone wants or needs another form of payment. Quickness? I'm not in that much of a hurry, either way.

that said, a few years ago I wrote a check to someone I knew. He deposited it via his bank app. Guess what? He didn't do it correctly although the check did get deposited and cleared. Months later, a check was presented and it was fraudulent. Signature was mine but the check number, top and bottom, was the wrong font. I got my money back and it was quite a bit but it could have been a lot more. My friend has, since that day, driven to the bank and deposited every check and has never done the telephone photo deposit again. Absolutely his fault although I never did figure out what he did. --98.237.xxx.xx

People want convenience. I am moving towards that as well.

One of my kids uses the photo deposit for checks. Has for years. Simple, easy and no driving to the bank.

I decided to do it and it wouldn't work. Tried a few times and then called the credit union the next morning. They stopped allowing business accounts from using that for deposits. Ugg

I am going to set up a Zelle account and most likely a Venmo personal account. Plan to this weekend. Same kid has Venmo so should be easy enough for me to get set. --107.147.xx.xx
