Forum Star (by BRAD 20,000 [IN]) Posted on: Feb 8, 2024 10:42 PM Message:
Based on number of posts.

The top 10 respondents for the last 365 days (?) are going to have 3 stars. (Zero, Ray, 6x6, Plenty, Ken, Brad, Vee, Mapleleaf, Sid, NE.)
The next 40 respondents (11-50 most number of posts in the last year) have two stars.
And then the next 50 respondents (51-100 most number of posts) have one star.
So, the more regularly you participate and interact, the higher your post count, and depending on how much others participate and interact, that determines your star level. --137.118.xx.xxx |

It means Congrats are in order Colleen - thank you for helping out others.
Now you can say a star was named after you --24.101.xxx.xxx |

It’s # of posts and has no bearing on knowledge or skill. Personally I don’t care for them. --24.152.xxx.xx |

Yes, it is interesting that it's based on interaction, not necessarily quality of answers... and doesn't take into account when you click "Submit" 10 times because something has the site moving slow.
It as suggested awhile back to go to a "Vote" system like other forums use, but really.... that just turns it into a popularity contest. And who is to say the voters are any more or less knowledgeable than the one who posted? I see upvotes all the time on posts on other sites by someone who just joined yesterday and hasn't even bought their first house yet... and the topic is something advanced like 1031 Exchanges. But newbie votes count just as much as veteran votes.
There's no perfect system. Up/down votes might be better, but only to a degree... and we have to remember our gracious host Mr. Landlord is funding all this out of his generosity and doesn't charge us a dime to use it. If we want "better", we have to be prepared to held shoulder the costs.
Sid 2 cents... gimme ma' star! ;-)

I just run off at the mouth and next thing I know I have three stars.
When I go to the convention I heard I can turn in a star for a free cocktail.
(I just made that part up, don't go running to Jeffrey and asking for free drinks) --107.147.xx.xx |

Jeffrey is just trying to encourage general participation, I'm sure. He uses a "three-star program" for his rentals, not surprised he uses it here too. But for someone to judge the "quality" of each post would be impossible, and as SID said, a voting up or down system isn't perfect either.
It's not a big deal, it does not earn you anything, and I'm quite sure none of us posts to get stars! --173.28.xx.xxx |
