So we are going to the Boot Camp this year. Just the wife and I, no kids or tag-alongs.
Making a vacation of sorts out of it and she brings up EPCOT. I'm meh to the idea but we do not take vacations so I have to open my mind to the possibility.
My question is simple... is it worth it? The last theme park I went to was years ago. Kids were young enough to enjoy it. I just remember standing in lines and all the people. This was in Florida as well.
Any input? We are wanting to get the hotel room booked and need to know for how long and all that. Plus need to figure out where we might go instead. Leaving the boot camp days only for boot camp. No way would I try and mix something else into those days.
Now she is saying that she has never been to SC... oh boy. Going to be a tough weekend trying to plan this out.

Well, you will have already paid for the flights, so I get why she wants to do more while you're there.
Is there any reason you CAN'T stay and have little fun? NEED to get back to work, no funds for it? If not, then why not?!
One thing about July (if that's when you're going) in Orlando - in addition to peak tourist season, it will be HOT. You could use it to your advantage: when the late afternoon thunderstorms hit, and everyone else runs for cover, you can move to the front of the line : )
No complaining allowed! If it ends up not being worth it, let HER say so.
My vote is to definitely make your spouse happy - in both directions. So, for another day choose something YOU would like.
When I went in the fall, the weather was perfect. I took an extra day to go on an airboat to see alligators. I think it was about an hour drive south, and very FUN. --68.229.xxx.xxx |

Agree. Make your spouse happy. This isn't difficult. And don't complain about the prices at Disney. It's expensive. Everyone knows it. Go have fun! --172.56.xx.xxx |

We have yet to decide if we are flying or driving. If we go places along the way then driving is better.
Had not considered the summer heat being so much more than we will be used to. That is a deterrent for her now.
It's not so much about the cost as we will be making so much more on the properties once we get back from the boot camp!
Chickens before the eggs hatch and all that.
She did like the airboat idea. Unless she just plans to push me in with the gators. --107.147.xx.xx |

Nope,no Disney in hot weather! Here is another vote for the airboat ride, which creates it's own breeze. If you want to see a bit of SC, Savannah is a lovely city. Check out Kelly tours for a 90 minute narrated tour in an air conditioned trolley. Eat lunch or dinner at the Mellow Mushroom on Liberty Street. --151.197.xxx.xx |

Depends on what your definition of “worth it” is. When I have the time and money to go somewhere, the last place I want to go is somewhere with all that general public. So for me, Epcot sounds like torture. --24.152.xxx.xx |

Walt Disney's philosophy was 80% entertainment, 20% marketing.
The one and only time I went to Epcot (granted, a couple of decades ago), it seemed like his philosophy had been flipped. 80% marketing, 20% entertainment. Each pavilion had a place to buy the local food and buy the local trinkets. Plus some entertainers (Morocco had a couple of people playing drums and flutes.)
They have rides, but the strategies to actually enjoy them without standing in line for hours are so complex that there are websites and forums dedicated to them. I saw a video where a dad took his kids there, and mom stayed at home and engineered their "fun" day moment by moment.
Not my idea of fun. Take time to enjoy the "real" Florida instead. --104.230.xxx.xxx |

Well I think Epcot is out. I wasn't keen on the crowds but adding in the heat made it off limits in her opinion as well.
So looking into airboat rides just because it's something different.
Also looking into Savannah, SC because of that review.
Then again we could try a different route altogether.
Back when The Walking Dead was a decent show we talked about going to Senoia, GA for the tours.
Guess I should have titled this what to do on the way to or from the Boot Camp.

Oops! My bad. Yes, Savannah, GA. SC has Congaree National Park, pretty.much a 1-day destination. We really enjoyed our day there, but it was late October. I think it would be pretty miserable in high summer. --151.197.xxx.xx |

I don't get out much, but judging from the responses, EPCOT is Disney.
I am basically with NE on this one.
Beyond that, I would take the kids because that is where the fun is. Adults are no fun. However, I tend to be hyper. otherwise, why have kids?
The great outdoors is much more peaceful. Horse ridding? Donkey petting? --73.190.xxx.xxx |

Wilma, no worries. We figured it out and it works for the best as now that is at the top of her list.
6x6, I agree with the sentiment about large crowds. The kids are grown. I might be able to talk them into going but only on my dime and I did that enough while they were growing up. Besides, this is a mini-vacation for the wife and I. I live in the great outdoors. Used to raise and show horses so that is off the table for me. Turned into a job. Bleh.
WMH, I believe you on the heat. Not sure why I didn't think of it to begin with. Have spent a little time down there and in TX during the summer. No thanks. Also we will find something from here to there.
Long drive (14 hours?) from me to the boot camp. --107.147.xx.xx |

We were going to drive, it's 12+ hours for us. I also looked at the train: 27+ hours. Plane: 2 hours non-stop...okay add showing up an hour early and delays...it's still hard to deny the efficiency of flying vs. ground transportation... especially when we are trying to get there and back quickly, as my son is his son's caregiver (his wife is the big dollar earner.) So we are flying :( --173.28.xx.xxx |

I am retired Navy and have been to all but one of the continents during my 21 years. That is a great deal of beer (during my youth) and different food from around the world......and trust me - I loved visiting EPCOT back in the late 80's
If you do fly down, understand that plane will be full of lots of kids. If you elect to drive down, Pigeon Forge is about half way down. The drive is rather long though. Given the choice, Fly if you can't get somewhere in 6-8 hours driving --24.101.xxx.xxx |

Thanks Ray, will put Pigeon Forge on her list and see if it flies (pun intended).
Just checked again and it is actually 16 hours from me to the hotel. That's a lot of driving for someone who doesn't like driving.
I also do not like flying, but the time saved is a consideration.
Looks like I have some more thinking to do and fast like so I can get a room. --107.147.xx.xx |

zero, I missed your last message fro 1/27 until now. Glad to have been of a help. We took a 3.5 weeks road trip from PA to FL and back in late Oct - mid Nov. Savannah was a highlight. Don't forget the Mellow Mushroom - really interesting pizza menu! --151.197.xxx.xx |

The *only* thing I miss about Florida is the springs, which are fabulous. w w w .visitflorida.com/things-to-do/outdoors-and-adventure/natural-springs/
We spent many weekends at Rock Springs, Wachiva Springs, etc. Just beautiful places. Especially if you like to swim in cold water on a hot day.
Probably really crowded these days, as everything worth anything is these days...the internet :( --173.28.xx.xxx |

Still considering driving but I think she is leaning more towards flying now.
As long as I make it to the boot camp the rest is up to her, before or after.
I have been told that we will make it to Savannah at some point this year. No clue if it will be during this trip or if it will be when it is a little cooler. --107.147.xx.xx |
