The last few roomers I've taken on have been immigrants from Azerbaijan, Egypt and a county in South America (don't recall which one). English is not their first language and they often struggle to communicate. I was at the rooming house today and apparently the Egyptian guy and the roomer from South America have struck up a friendship and it was just funny to see them communicating with each other in broken English.
All of these guys are working people engaged in low level manual labor type jobs. Other than their nation of origin, they share common circumstances that bring people together who would otherwise not be. I would include myself in that as well. I would not run across these folks in my normal day to day affairs otherwise. Just an observation.

While many people who are born here sit around at home where on social assistance complain about immigrants fail to understand that taxes people pay are supported them. On the main street you see them at the place around lunch time waiting to hot meal which is run by volunteers. When the Ukrainians arrived in Manitoba they took on construction jobs where before they could not start projects as no one wanted to work. The Ukrainians take any job even it is below qualifications. Some Ukrainians are working at the place where they make vehicles that can withstand bullets and other hits which are being used in Ukraine. Where one vehicle got hit where everyone survived. Those people are fortunate to find housing where here many of them are not able to. While the population increased in Ontario by 500,000 housing of all types did not. --207.236.xxx.xxx |

I have NO problem with LEGAL aliens who follow the rules and work in gainful, legal employment, having been one myself.
I DO have a problem with native born able bodied citizens who are idle and shiftless.
I DO have a problem with people who jumped the fence to get here whether they are gainfully employed or not. --64.246.xxx.xxx |

Kudos to you for providing housing for these people. Immigrants for the last 300 years have come to the United States to find a better life. I'm sure they appreciate your efforts. --67.184.xxx.xxx |

If I was going to move and live in a foreign country I would learn the language spoken there before I moved there and not have to depend on my bi-lingual children. Besides, could you imagine the hassle involved in trying to evict a non-English speaking tenant? --71.207.xxx.x |

We live in country that official languages where english and french depending on where you live. There is google translate. Here it is possible to take English as second language which means English is not mother language. For children is lot easier as they go to school then over a short period of time are exposed to English language including the bad words. If was matter of taking a person on social assistance or someone is working then would always take the person who is working. If you go Holland English is widely spoken where Germany well educated speak English along with those with less education limited English or no English at all. A lot of things in stores is in English as more than ever there is more English in the German language. Getting back to immigrants they have some ambitions where they try to improve themselves not expect to be spoon fed forever. Ukrainians are going to receive the F 16 fighter jets where now the pilots are learning the English language where it is essential to go through the training. Every time some new weapon is received there the Ukrainians are quick to learn. It is quantum leap getting western military hardware where a lot more is automated. Lets take a serious look at Russia which has had little immigration along with the level of education has declined. It is a like living in third world country further east of Moscow where dirt roads, out houses along houses in really poor condition. --207.236.xxx.xxx |

GKARL, I have just made the acquaintance of a 60ish American couple who lived until very recently for nearly 2 decades in Azerbaijan, now living in Upper Bucks County. They might be happy to keep their language skills in practice, should you need a translator. Drop an email to me if needed - buckingham3br "at" gmail. I would then ask them about that. --98.115.xxx.xxx |

Among my tenants are people whose native languages are Dari, Spanish, Swahili, Nepali, and Malay. My leases are in English. For the ones that are placed through an agency, the agency provides a translator to read through the lease. Other times, they'll bring a friend or a child that speaks English to translate. It's on them to make sure they understand what they're signing.
After that is when it gets a little more challenging. I find that a combination of google translate/charades/pics on the phone allow us to get just about anything across. And after a particularly challenging week of interactions with entitled members of a certain "protected class," I'm considering narrowing my rental criteria to exclude everyone EXCEPT immigrants! --65.28.xxx.xxx |

As a child of immigrants and English was not spoken in my home when I was very young, there is NO way I would ever use google translate for business/legal purposes. Immigrants need to supply their own translator.
I don't know of a law that requires the lease to be in their native language, although I've never specifically looked into it. --98.237.xxx.xx |

When I had Hispanic tenants that couldn't speak English they supplied translators. When I had to discuss alone it was tough as I don't remember much from the one year of Spanish I took back in high school. But we made it work.
Now I have some Indians living in a unit. The lease holder has been in the states for 10 years or so. He speaks English fairly well. His roommates are a married couple with a child. They are new to English and speak broken at best. We still got everything worked out, but it was tougher.
They have a young daughter who is just now trying to learn English. I was over there working on a sink drain when her word of the day was orange. She had a little shaw or blanket that was orange. She kept picking it up and saying the color. It was fun. She also gave me a couple cheerios that she had been eating. We are now friends. --107.147.xx.xxx |

I think I am the only landlord left in the world that still answers his own phone, regardless of who is calling. During the first 10 seconds of any phone call, when I realize English is not the caller's first language, I just hang the phone up.
So, for this reason, I would never even get to the point of having to tell someone why I am not renting to you. --71.207.xxx.x |

NE,
Just yesterday I told an 81 year old woman on the phone why I would not rent my vacant house to her and her 60 year old daughter even though they spoke great English. This couple had just way too many red flags for me to deal with. A non-English speaking couple would be just another major red flag.
I tend to rent to applicants that have the least number of red flags. --71.207.xxx.x |

If my applicants did not have any red flags, they would probably be homeowners instead of renters. However, most of applicants/tenants will be renting for life due to poor choices they made either in the past or in the present. --71.207.xxx.x |
