Below, here is a thread on a murder in a rental, and it reminded me that this is one of the reasons why you change locks between tenants. If that goon was in prison and got out and went after that girl and had a key, he could’ve snuck in in the middle of the night unnoticed.

CHANGE YOUR LOCKS between tenants. --24.152.xxx.xx

Should’ve added that if you have a new tenant in the unit, you don’t know who has the old keys. Granted they may still kick the door in, but at least no key will slow them down a bit. --24.152.xxx.xx

Good point, NE. I agree. Less liability on the LL as well. --73.190.xxx.xxx

If using a grade one or grade two deadbolt then can lock out then take to locksmith to have rekeyed then keep the master key set up. Or if a tenant wants to keep someone then can rekey lock. Having a deadbolt and passage lock where the tenant can not lock themselves out. It usually costs under $20 dollars to have lock rekeyed where domestic grade 3 locks are not good option as easy to break into. For a apartment complex it is better to have controlled entrance that keeps a lot of the bad element out along with in the winter time the drunks out as well. The future is a security camera system as well where drug dealers are less likely to come around. --207.236.xxx.xxx

I have always changed locks between tenants, no matter who they are. Rented to my daughter, changed the locks, rent to my mother-in-law, changed the locks every time she moved.

Had a guy that was all set to move in years back. Got the money, signed the lease, gave him the keys and he backed out that evening. Since I gave him the keys I changed the locks again.

Every single lock that I have come across is easily defeated. Slip joint pliers, drill bit, credit card, wonder bar or just a heavy thump from a fast moving object.

All locks do is keep honest people honest and take a little time, energy and sound to get thru them. --107.147.xx.xxx

I always change the locks after all the workers are finished as well as the garage remotes. --146.70.xxx.xxx

I use the landlord locks and the center cylinder gets changed between tenants. Its a 30 second job and as easy as anything could possibly get, and yet my key still works on every house. --76.178.xxx.xxx

NE,

Good stuff.

Over the years with many units we’ve had 1 murder, a few rapes, residents harassed by exes, protective orders against exes, 1 arson by an ex…

Indiana law REQUIRES the LL to change locks if one party requests a change when involved in a domestic issue or protective order

The police ALWAYS want to know when the locks were changed

AND who has access to keys, master key.

We log the new numbers on the move in inspection.

Great idea logging in the key number at move in, so if they need the cylinders swapped out you can log that too.

How much does everyone charge to swap out the cylinders? --24.101.xxx.xxx

If I do not get the keys back I charge $50/door for rekey.

I always have a copy of the key in my book-o-keys. --107.147.xx.xxx
