I have to replace a half dozen or so old school 9" x 9" floor tiles.
Am all set to go but looking for suggestions for the right adhesive.
Replacing the flooring is not an option.
This is my current primary residence which when sold [4/5 years down the road ]will be demolished. Old house built ca. 1890...big lot. --173.63.xx.xxx |

Do it right and use thin set applied with a notched trowel (1/4 x 1/4 x 1/4 ). You’ll need to grind the old away first. --172.56.xx.xxx |

If you are talking about the old VCT tiles then you need to use the mastic designed for VCT tiles, something like Henry's 430. Most adhesives don't bond well to vinyl.
Be very careful when you remove the old mastic. 9x9 tiles are of the vintage that the mastic likely has asbestos in it. Wet it down to take it off so the fibers don't get airborne, wear a respirator, and wipe everything down with a wet soapy rag once you finish and the dust settles. If you don't have too much to remove, I would suggest a chisel rather than a grinder. It will create way less dust. --209.205.xxx.xx |

As Mike A said most likely those tiles have asbestos as a binder in not only the tile but the black mastic that was used to install them. He's absolutely correct about wetting it down with soapy water, not just plain water & to wear a respirator. I've used this spray adhesive to refasten loose VCT. ://www.homedepot.com/p/Gorilla-14-oz-Spray-Adhesive-6301502/303508262 --72.93.xxx.xx |

I've used spray on contact cement to replace old vct tile. Mask around the tile void to catch over spray, prep the void so it's clean and spray both the void n tile, apply pressure, done --72.10.xxx.xx |

If the size is 9 x 9, I am thinking you are working with VCT. If you still want to use them, getting that backing off the floor is going to be tough. It is dangerous to remove the stuff on the floor and then getting that floor level is going to be problematic.
You might want to consider leveling it out by just placing the VCT back and going over the flooring. --24.101.xxx.xxx |
