I believe the 2019 law specifies that a "hardship" case can stay for 1 year w/o paying rent but this legislation expands the definition of "hardship" to practically anything:

There is a "new: law in New York State that allows tenants to stay in the home they are renting even if they do not pay.

If you know anyone who owns a rental property, hopefully, things are going well. New York State has put a ton of new laws in place that makes things more clear in a ton of different aspects of the landlord-tenant relationship.

If you have someone who is a horrible tenant, look how long they can LEGALLY and technically live in your rental unit! An entire year!

WYRK.C0M

Of course this will actually make it worse for renters as more people abandon the housing provider business and screening will continue to become more and more severe.

This reminds me of a story I heard once...

Billy: "Mom, Larry kicked me in the shines and stole my action figures again!"

Mom: "Oh my, that's terrible. But didn't Larry do that last week, and the week before?"

Billy: "Yes, he did."

Mom: "Why do you keep playing with Larry? He's showed that he's not a good person to hang around with. You're kind of allowing this to happen to yourself. Why don't you find some other kids to play with who won't treat you this way?"

Billy (crickets)

As my 4th Grade teacher used to say, "A word to the wise is sufficient."

If things in my state get close to that point, I'm going to send a letter to all my federal, state, and local government leaders. It will have the names of every single one of my tenants that will end up unhoused if I sell. They may not care about me, but there are a whole lotta tenants that I carry! --104.230.xxx.xxx

Just another reason to screen your tenants politics. A little conservative American pride goes a long way in paying your rent to your landlord versus a tenant who’s going to use the State against you. --24.152.xxx.xx

If you loose a housing case and the judge orders your eviction, you can ask the court for up to 1 year to move if you can show that you cannot find a similar apartment in the same neighborhood. The judge will take into account your health conditions, whther you have children enrolled in school, the hardship of the landlord if you remain and any other life circumstances that could affect your ability to move. --74.77.xx.xx

That’s right Mapleleaf. With the Internet, we are rapidly losing our geographical segregation. You could have a full-blown Mar-xist com-munist living right next-door to an American patriot. Find out who they are before you give them the keys. --24.152.xxx.xx

It is time for a class action suit where that is unconstitutional. Suppose they were going let people walk out of a grocery without paying than a week later the workers at the grocery store would find out they lost jobs as the grocery store closed down. Even if has to go to supreme court where that is only action that the leftist understand not rolling over and paying dead. As a group action needs to taken. Hardship then what the hardship that rental housing providers have to pay taxes along with other bills to maintain rental complexes. What about 5 years of not paying taxes. --207.236.xxx.xxx

Unless I'm missing something they have to pay to stay, and yes hardship was further defined in 2019 to include the unhealthy who might be bed ridden and families who would otherwise have to interrupt juniors school year. I think it would be hard for tenant to show they actually contacted other lls and were rejected but a judge might sympathize w them. --172.59.xxx.xxx
