I know this has been discussed before, but my Honda Pilot just bit the dust.

I prefer an SUV to a truck or van. Here in SC light trailers are not registered or taxed, so it's cheaper to use a vehicle with a trailer instead of something larger.

What is your favorite vehicle and why?

I'm looking at a 4Runner. I like luxury, but still use it as a work truck. LOL

The newer 2021+ highlander is the same towing capacity but the sister in law has the hybrid and gets 38 mpg! If I were to get a newer car it would be that. Rides really nice.

RAV4 could pull a small trailer if you are only doing that. Regular is 3500 lbs but hybrid limited to 1500 lbs. --65.188.xxx.xxx

I have a full sized 1/2 ton truck with a 4 banger in it. It pulls ok so far although nothing extreme yet.

Wife has a new Highlander with a tow hitch. She will never allow it to pull anything but it gets good mileage and says it can pull stuff. Full of bells and whistles.

Always preferred a truck myself. If I am out and get a call where I need to pick something bigger up I don't have to go grab a trailer.

But that Highlander has a lot of bells and whistles so maybe I am being old school. --107.147.xx.xxx

There are two sizes of pickup in the family, plus dump trailer, cargo trailer, flatbed trailer. I can move most things I might need.

If I am going to show a house or look at a needed repair, I have a cute little HHR that I love that also has a fairly decent cargo space for its size, and I have a Yukon for when the weather is bad or when I need to carry a little more stuff.

Mostly what I look for is enough cargo space to carry my dogs and a full shopping at Costco. I've got trailers I can use for big stuff.

I had a cargo van for awhile and it worked great. Lots of cargo space and I could lock it up with all the goodies inside and not very visible. However, it was a booger to give it a tune-up and the family mechanic rebelled and refused to work on it anymore. --76.178.xxx.xxx

Nothing sits in the bed of the truck to be stolen.

Fits 4x8 sheets of sheet rock and plywood.

Big enough for appliances.

Don’t have to lift anything into the bed of the truck - just tilt it over and slide it in the back of the van.

Canoe rack on top for ladders.

I have the new Chevy Silverado truck in the driveway, but, prefer the 17 year old mini van.

Can't go wrong with a Toyota. 4 Runners are great, only thing better off road or in deep snow/sand is a Jeep. But the mileage is poor and requires after market front lockers, though in SC that may not matter. They are body on frame like a truck. At least the older ones. But hoo-doggy the price!

I liked the older boxy Rav4's, but the new one's look like a hopped up rollerskate on wheels. From what I've seen in the snow the Subaru Forester has a better AWD system. But the Subi's are a 100k mi car, where Toyota is a 300k. I want to get away from all these chip controlled cars that turn into bricks when some obscure sensor goes bad and it's 6 months to get a new part.

I had a 2002 F250 diesel for about two years, recently sold it. Originally I loved it. It was going to be my forever dream truck. It was, "The Beast," had locking hubs, a lift gate and service bed with cabinets. I used the lift like twice. With all the weight and windage it got 10 mpg. I found I prefer my multi tool box set up rather than the cabinets. I sold it to my AC guy who put a fancy wrap on it.

You asked what we liked? I like my F150. Driven them since the 80's. It's a 2019 with the extended cab and 6.5' bed instead of the short bed crew cab. The cockpit has more lights and switches than my old Piper. It's the most luxurious car I've ever owned. A pleasure to drive in any conditions. Gets 21 around town and I've squeezed out 26.5 on a road trip staying at 65.

But, the turbos are 5 grand, each. Major engine work requires removing the entire cab! When the warranty runs out in a couple of years, I'm thinking my next truck will be a restored 1970's F150 with the old straight six like I used to have. It won't improve mileage but is at least fixable. Maybe I can get an 8-track... ;)

Same with the Corvette. We've had our fun. Still have our drivers licenses. The roads here are getting too bad to drive it. I-40 especially, potholes everywhere. We can't leave it parked without a babysitter. If it's not stolen outright, someone will "key" the paint out of spite. Then we have the crazies who stand by the road and throw rocks. The police won't do anything unless they witness it. Our recent sailing trip in CA (spent a week at Catalina) we ended up driving our beater. I didn't feel comfortable leaving anything else sitting at the marina for a week.

All I know is EV's aren't ready for prime time and I'm not spending 100 grand plus on a car. We may just buy a Toyota Camry and call it a wrap.

I just went from a Honda Pilot to a 4 Runner last fall. The 4 Runner was the only SUV on the market where the back window went down. My previous Honda Pilot the back window lifted but now they are all fixed. I want an SUV for putting my supplies in for the apartments and picking up toilets/vanities/etc. Personally, I require access through my back window for my paddle board so the only option was the 4 Runner. I have put my back window down when I picked up storm doors that wouldn’t fit in with the back hatch closed. What I miss and preferred about the Honda Pilot was it was about 6 inches longer inside with the back seats down, the back seats lay flatter when down, the wheel wells may have been less prominent, and the back floor doesn’t extend out all the way even so when lifting heavy things up and in, you have to lean over to get it to the floor. To me, my paddle board going through the window was the most important part so I’m happy with the 4 Runner. I would drive your pilot over to whatever vehicle you are thinking about and pop the back, pull out a tape measure and see how they are different. --73.159.xxx.xx

The seats fold flat enough I can haul a lot in it, although a 4x8 I have to hang out the back a bit. The back window rolls down. It has 10,000 lb towing capacity, which is more than I will ever need. --98.174.xxx.xxx

Here some rental housing providers buy a older pickup truck or van. A work truck is not luxury but for work. A smaller pick up is a better option as when require more capacity then a trailer is used. Pilot has 190k miles. It suddenly started consuming oil a week ago. Mechanic says the cat converter guts disintegrated and the dust was sucked into the engine through the recirc exhaust system. Basically pours sand into the cylinders. He said this is a known problem with the Pilot. Until last week it ran great.

I had a 2007 Highlander before it. That was a great vehicle, I ran it to 250k and wife insisted I sell it and upgrade.

I like the 4Runner, it is probably my first pick...so far. However, it has not been updated in years. Still has a 5 speed and worst gas mileage in class.

I may consider a minivan after reading these comments, but I really need something that will tow a small tractor (1800 pounds plus the trailer). --69.80.xx.xxx

We went to buy another Sienna and found out that some genius in the design department decided to make the middle seats NON-REMOVABLE. But back when I DIY'd it, I'd go with the cheapest thing that could haul a lot. 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 with quad cab and full size bed with cover. Also had a 5 x 10 utility trailer. Both vehicles have locking differential for 4x4 jams but it's a use it or lose it thing w the electronics. Anyway if you got country property or are handy a pickup makes sense. Charlie handles all the lawn mowing, landscaping, and this-n-that. I’m meeting him today to look at adding some insulation in a cellar to prevent pipes freezing.

Scott’s team handles things when I need a plumber

I call Mike when I need an electrician.

I call Chris when the HVAC is an issue

My own vehicle is a minivan. Scooter likes the sliding door I can open from a distance and he can run ahead and jump in.

I do carry a few things in it…. I hauled a bunch of furnace filters around last week. Gave me a great reason to ever every single residence. Changed the filters, spoke with the residents, scanned for extra toothbrushes, gave them the sniff test…..

That reminds me… I need to sell my trailer. It has been in the barn now for at least 2 years. Time to let it go. That will let me get out the riding mower I haven’t used since 2015 and sell it off as well.

Yeah, I like filters for that reason too. A good reminder to visit the place at least four times a year. --96.242.xx.xx

My favorite is my GTI. Lots of space for tools in the hatchback and it's a fun car to take on the track :-) --96.242.xx.xx

I upgraded last year to a 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD double cab with an aluminum Reading Utility Body, magnum rack, Fisher 8.5' v plow and just ordered a tommy gate. It's a little taller then my prior 2003 Silverado which about the most that I don't like about this truck. --71.184.xxx.xxx

We have a Nissan NV2500 and it is the best truck we have ever owned (56 years and counting). Unfortunately, they (Nissan) are no longer building vans. Ours is a 2012 and we usually trade about ten years so we have ordered a Mercedes Sprinter 144 but would buy another Nissan if available. --74.69.xxx.xx

Don and others,

Good questions.

I CAN drive my Porsches because we set up SYSTEMS to handle problems

#1 System: My lease makes the resident responsible for repairs other than roof and HVAC.

-If they need help we point them to YouTube for How To videos

or my handyman will talk them thru it over the phone.

Heck, my Customer Service gal can help them with minor stuff by text!

-$85 trip charge for resident caused repairs

-I LOVE disposals because Momma picks the house and SHE wants a disposal, SO...we stopped using the cheap ones and pay a few bucks extra for the bigger motor. I now buy KitchenAide 1.25 HP at Costco for $99.

I think that thing would simply shred the bottlecap!

I'm trying to get to Brad2000 state of mind. Have been looking at some sports cars-- but my wife says "NO". Driving a 2021 Tundra now... I "retired" for the second time in September.. First time from my regular job 7 years ago...second time from doing repairs/ maintenance on the rentals. My new motto is if it takes more than four hours, it gets hired for sure. If I have something better to do, it gets hired no matter what. Went to Wyoming grouse hunting, Chukar hunting in Eastern Oregon, pheasant hunting in South Dakota, Chukar hunting in Nevada (all for a minimum of 5 days) so will still need the 4 wheel drive Tundra. Just want a sports car for fun .. --76.138.xxx.xxx

As much as I like a pickup truck, I prefer my Ford Econoline 350 cargo van. I've had this van for 14 years, and no one has ever stolen any tools or purchased goods from out of it while I'm at home, in the store or on the job. That aspect alone has paid me huge dividends. --174.239.xxx.xx

I just bought a new ford maverick hybrid for a work truck. It will only tow 2000 lbs, so I’ll still have my tundra for real towing . I actually prefer the small trucks for getting in traffic and whipping into parking spaces. The hybrid part will be neat too because I still do showings. As I prefer to interview all potential tenants as an added way to catch the lies. The 50 mpg is a nice money saver. --66.169.xxx.xxx
