Because foreigners are no longer assimilating to the main culture/language. At least not in western society. Nor are they required to be gainfully employed. A recipe for disaster in any country. I doubt they have this policy in Japan or any other sane country. --64.246.xxx.xx |

Canadian english is the closet to the Us except for the spelling which is the same as the UK. Where all the former commonwealth countries the last letter is pronounced as Zed not Zee. Except for the east coast where someone from Vancouver would not able to tell they are from as the english is exactly the same where in the Us there are differences. Swiss they have three languages which are German, French and Italian where most can speck English. For measurement almost everything is metric except for building materials where the other countries like the UK, Australia, New Zealand it is metric. Metric is easier to work with as everything is decimal where no fractions along can change from small to large by moving a decimal point. --74.220.xxx.xxx |

I wish the U.S. would finally go to the metric system. It's about too late for me, but it is much easier to learn.
Besides then everything is the same across the board. --107.147.xx.xxx |

The Us is mostly metric where NASA, military, medical, dentist, automotive, industrial is using metric system where construction is using the imperial system along with gasoline, roads, grocery, weather are using imperial. In the EU eggs are in tens not twelve. If bought a completely metric measuring tape it would be in millimetres and centimetres which is easy as everything is in tens no fractions. Mechanics are using metric sockets and wrenches as automotive is computerized. In the end if make something for Us market then another for export market it costs lower where standardization reduces cost than products cost lower. I remember the protests here when gasoline was converted from imperial gallon to litres where now no protests. The Us is the head of NATO where one system is being used in all NATO countries along training is close. The main difference military training here is being able to operate at low temperature of - 40 degrees Celsius where that meets on the Fahrenheit scale. --74.220.xxx.xxx |

I work with a lot of Europeans and as soon as they start complaining about our imperial measurement system, I remind them “there are two types of countries: ones that use the metric system, and ones that have landed on the moon”
Not entirely true but it’s a fun way to egg them on. --50.219.xxx.xxx |

“there are two types of countries: ones that use the metric system, and ones that have landed on the moon”
Interestingly, we (US) had one moon flyby mission where a technician who didn't understand about metric/imperial entered a coordinate in miles instead of km, and the mission failed.
Billions of dollars lost, because the US high school + community college graduate was never even trained in metric measures much less prepared to think his way through a exercise.
By the way, what ads aren't in English?

Jason: I've seen that quote a few times and it is funny, sure, but completely makes the wrong point -- since, as mentioned above, we GOT to the moon by using metric. :)

Hmmmm a metric six pack would be would be 2.2 times greater so we could have 13.2 beers in a six pack. No wonder Bob and Dave McKenzie support metric --24.101.xxx.xxx |

The math teacher hat is coming out.
The US uses US customary units, not Imperial units. There is a difference. The biggest difference is the size of the gallon.
You can read more at
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_and_US_customary_measurement_systems
Liberia and Myanmar also use US Customary units.
Most science, technology and engineering is done in SI units, which are metric. Everything needs to be done so that the same tools can be used around the world.
Craziest thing that came about more recently was when one of the Mars Rovers crashed on Mars. One team was working in US Customary units for some reason. The rest were using SI units. Result was a slam into Mars by the rover.
Needless to say, we make a big deal about listing your units at my local Science and Tech university --149.76.xxx.xx |

Hubby was a high school science teacher. He hammered his students on the importance of units. They hated it and thought him picayune, but would later come back to thank him as they aced college science courses.
Me? It would be a heckuva lot easier to cook and bake if the recipes used metric measurements, especially when doubling or tripling quantities. I've griped about this for years! --98.114.xxx.xxx |
