California lawmakers vote to ban mandatory evictions for arrested tenants -- The bill’s author, Assemblymember Tina McKinnor (D-Hawthorne), said that its passage advances the state’s racial justice efforts by stopping communities from using crime-free housing laws to exclude or push out Black and Latino renters. It sounds like some leases have clauses that allow LLs to evict people for getting arrested (note: it doesn't say "convicted"). Seems a tad harsh, considering we're supposed to be a society that believes in "innocent until proven guilty."
As long as they still pay... I say let 'em stay.

Interesting for sure... I'm sort of with Sid on this as for "you continue to pay, you stay" and I'd certainly be on the side of "innocent until proven guilty" yet you know that once someone is in the news for being arrested for (or whatever) social media, etc immediately state they are now guilty.
Hard to say about someone that is a $ex offender though.. (same holds true to that as well... once charges are filed against them... they are deemed guilty) but I don't know if I'd be renewing their leases. --69.201.xx.xxx |

"Assembly Bill 1418 combats local policies known as “crime-free housing” that can require landlords to evict tenants for arrests or prohibit landlords from renting to those with prior convictions. The bill would make many of these laws unenforceable, ending the practice in scores of communities."
I cut and pasted the quote above from the LA Times. Apparently local governments can no longer pass laws REQUIRING LLs to reject felons or evict arrestees in specially designated "crime free" neighborhoods. --107.141.xx.xxx |

Had a tenant during the eviction moratorium that was dealing drugs and not paying the rent. Pissing off the other tenants with the foot and car traffic to his apartment. He was arrested after. DEA drug bust. Cops found drugs, bags of cash, and guns. T told me after he bailed out and got his 3 day notice that he would fight the eviction and it would take me 2 years to get him out. Due to the drug arrest, he was out in 90 days…. No more in Cacafornia! --201.140.xxx.xx |

Maybe it be better to put non citizens on a plane than out of country so the criminal action ends once and for all. The problem with some left wing politicians that having drug dealers in buildings will impair the safety of other tenants where a shootings are not uncommon when they are not paid. The left wing really will ruin a economy where some jurisdictions cause a serious crime like assault and robbery in the morning than out on bail in the afternoon than a week or more later all over again. --74.220.xxx.xxx |

I had to replace a long term tenants washer and dryer, no big deal! But my other tenants, who are not allowed to have their own washer or dryer -- I have a laundry room with coin operated machines are demanding their own machines like my 17 year tenant. City ordered me to give all tenants free washer/dryers. --47.155.xx.xxx |

Again I believe that if the lawmakers had to have these arrested tenants living next to them maybe the laws would be written differently.
I believe in innocent until proven guilty up to a point. Then common sense should take over. --107.147.xx.xxx |

I don't understand why the voting tenants do not complain to their lawmakers. After all, they are the ones who are forced to live next door to felons, drug dealers, and child molesters. --76.178.xxx.xxx |

I do not know the way in the Us but here in federal, provincial and municipal elections the majority of tenants do not vote as the extreme left socialist democrats are voted in one term in provincial election. Homeowners have much better turn out in all levels of elections. A lot of those on social assistance are too lazy to do anything. No one is going to see any positive by making criminals easy bail where they only continue after getting out again. Most of the shootings are result of the illegal drug trade. Where here it is illegal to carry a handgun where the drug dealers have them. --74.220.xxx.xxx |

Most jurisdictions landlord and tenant is a provincial or state level. Here many are asking the prime minister to step down where in the polls the Progressive Conservatives are heeded for a majority. Unlikely the federal government will step in with landlord and tenant. What is common between Canada and the Us is housing is limited where expensive along with vacant rental units are difficult to find so problem tenants are going to stay out of the private sector rental housing market. --74.220.xxx.xxx |

Complaining to a lawmaker would not get you to far if they are trying to battle Disparate Impact Arguments. The arrest rate is higher for minorities than the general public.
Does that mean it is more common or does it mean people are watching someone of color differently? Maybe it is more accepted to allow crime to occur in some cultures than others? Maybe it is a combination of things. It would be hard to complain anyway you slice it, without coming off as a racist.
No easy answers. I am sadden to hear that Crime Free Multi Housing is going away. I viewed as a community watch program on steroids. --24.101.xxx.xxx |
