Window wrapping and caulk (by Jason [PA]) Posted on: Sep 14, 2023 4:01 PM Message:
1. What is the best type of caulk I can buy ,preferably from home depot (probably bidroom priced), that I can get the best bang for the buck with, not 9$ a tube stuff hopefully?
2
Can I wrap a 2nd floor emergency exit only door threshold in aluminum,it is on second floor and goes directly to to a flat roof and is ALMOST never used, but I BELIEVE it is leaking --71.207.xx.xx |

OSI for the caulk. Not sure about #2. --73.230.xxx.xx |

I buy Dap Alex Plus from Lowes for caulking around doors, windows and trim. About $4 per tube. MUCH easier to work with and much less expensive than 100% silicone caulks. --107.141.xx.xxx |

There are many types of chalk which are indoor, outdoor along chalk that is waterproof which is used in bathrooms and exterior applications. Large gaps then a can of insulation spray foam will seal up. Outdoor chalking has a strong odder which should not used indoors. Another option is to look at installing flashing where a water channel prevents water from entering. --74.220.xxx.xxx |

Quad or a rubberized product, sticks to everything, requires patience with paint thinner to remove mistakes and stinks like heck - not for beginners at all. --184.59.xxx.xx |

I started using Quad for outdoor work. Seems to do well enough. It is NOT toolable. The tube even says it. They aren't lying. I can get a little work on a bead, but nothing like silicone.
As far as what else to use it all depends on what you are doing.
If you are running it around trim or even small cracks in walls the Alex is good. It is paintable and easy to run.
If you are running outside I would not use a standard caulk. Silicone or the afore mentioned rubberized stuff will hold up better.
If you are running it in a wet environment like around kitchen counters, tubs, vanities and the like then get something that is silicone with anti mildew properties. They still mildew if not cleaned but it takes longer.
I do not buy the really expensive stuff. I try to stay away from the 20 year Alex and get the better quality. Seems to go on easier and shrinks less. For silicone around tubs and such I spend more on a specialized product. It seems to hold up better and last longer. --107.147.xx.xxx |

I believe that the other posters have covered the caulking part of your question. As far as using coil stock to cover a leaking aluminum door threshold, it could work. However, I'd be more inclined to take a much closer look at the actual threshold / door / jamb connections to determine where water could possibly be entering.
If there are visible screws securing the threshold to the framing, missing caulk where the threshold ends meet the side jambs, a bad weatherstrip across the bottom of the door or even if the threshold isn't properly sealed to the apron, these would be the most likely ways that water is getting past the actual threshold. --72.93.xxx.xx |

never use Solar Seal for anything near where people will be breathing. Someone used it on my porch roof and had to stay out of the bedroom attached for weeks. --173.61.xxx.xxx |

For sticky stuff like quad, consider using blue painters tape if you're not a pro and confident
But for a rental, I wouldn't care if outside caulk was a little messy --174.245.xx.xxx |

Re: the leak at the door.
I once had a mystery leak that took me a long time to find.
Eventually, it stopped when I caulked the vertical seam between the (vinyl) J-channel and the door frame. --68.229.xxx.xxx |

David, Good call in the tape. I am not a pro but I can put a decent bead of silicone down. My normal reaction is to tool it, usually with my finger, but you can't get much good with the quad.
I just hate spending all the time wrapping a window only to have it look bad because I bumped the caulk gun. --107.147.xx.xxx |
