I just got a quote to install two “new construction” windows at my personal residence. The windows are about 2 feet by 4 feet casement style windows. I don’t have trim around the windows on the outside. The cedar clapboards abut the windows. So in general the insulation consists of removing the old windows, which will involve some removal/cutting back of the exterior clapboards, installing the new windows, and repairing the exterior clapboards, and re-installing/replacing the interior window trim. My quote was time and material. The estimated time to perform this job was 36 hours. That seemed very high to me. I figured it was a 16 man hour job (it’s a two man team). Am I out of line with this estimate or is he high? --73.60.xx.xxx

Why not use "replacement" windows? No need to disturb your siding.

Much easier / quicker / cheaper to install

"New construction" windows really are best for new construction - because they go in before the siding --174.47.xxx.x

I'll agree with DJ

Also, that estimate seems ridiculous. --172.58.xxx.xxx

DJ - not sure that’s an option considering the current ‘new construction’ windows are installed into the exterior sheething under the clapboards. --73.60.xx.xxx

Johnny--If the old windows are wooden, you take the glass panels out along with the side trim and leave the wood frame in place. The replacement windows fit inside the frames of the old wooden windows. --73.141.xxx.xxx

JohnnyB,

NEVER agree to time and materials. Never. The work will always fill the time unless there is a deadline.

Is the installation awkward, such as very high? or in a weird place to put a ladder?

Replacement windows do not have a nail flange like new const windows that needs to be covered with trim.

Shop around.

My Window World guy is good. Not a discount dealer but quality materials, pro installers, and a respectable price.

Each dealer is independently operated so reputations vary.

BRAD

I've gotten several quotes for replacement windows on a 60s ranch and they are coming in at $515 to $550 a window. As a point of reference for you. --71.69.xx.xx

If they are in fact experienced carpenters, I agree that a total of 4 1/2-man days to remove 2 existing casement windows & replace them with similar size windows is high. Of course, if there is something unusual or challenging about this project, it might take that long.

I'd be more interested in their total fee than the number of hours involved. Some guys bill out at a much higher hourly rate & are worth it while others charge a lower per hour rate & try to make up for it by dragging the project out.

I presume that they are licensed & fully insured & will pull a permit. --72.93.xxx.xx

Contractor here. 4 hour job, per window, TOPS. That's if I did the job myself, without a helper. If the clapboard is cut back perfectly, they can put a 5/4 X 4 primed trim in around new windows, no need to put new clapboard.

That being said, I concur with other opinions. Vinyl replacements are the easiest way to go, providing the existing windows sills and jambs are not rotten. Good luck --68.129.xx.xxx
