Slider Latch (by Oregon Woodsmoke [ID]) Posted on: May 25, 2023 11:51 AM

The lock on the sliding glass door doesn't stay locked. The little latch in the handle that you push to engage the lock simply falls back down to the bottom of its range and unhooks the lock.

Is this something I repair by opening the latch up and replacing a spring? Or do I try to find a replacement handle and latch that is compatible with the door?

The door will lock as it has a separate locking mechanism, but it is inconvenient to have the main lock not functioning.

In all my ears of landlording, this is the first time I have seen this issue. --76.178.xxx.xxx

What your describing is a Code Red problem with a slider

latch.

The most favored fix is a wood stick,

placed at the bottom rail.

Those latches are useless anyway. A $2 screwdriver defeats them. Put a broomstick in the track. --73.141.xxx.xxx

There are locks, additional to the handset. The lock attaches at the top of the door that slides and pushes up to secure. Think I've seen them at Lowe's. --172.59.xxx.xxx

If the brand is known then can replace or take the latch assembly out then visit a locksmith where may repair or order a new one if not in stock. --74.220.xxx.xxx

I am so glad I don't have any rentals with sliders. They are such a PITA.

Unfortunately I got a good deal on three new sliders and still have them in stock after many years. --107.147.xx.xxx

stick in the door track

second shorter stick in door track for couple inches of ventilation

also -- drill a hole for a screw in center door stiles where both doors overlap. -- careful you dont hit the glass.

screw into and through both door stiles. this will also make it harder to lift doors up and out of track from outside. --172.250.x.xx
