So I wrote about this briefly before maybe I'm the only one it really irritates,.. but I'm both reading and watching more TV. since my injury. And I notice, mostly in commercials, that in the background and often embedded in music, that there are sounds kind of in the background. That sounds like certain electronic things in my house. Some sound very much like my telephone, another might sound much like a possible smoke or CO2 alarm that needs a battery, or number of other things in this house that has electronic sounds attached. I believe they embed these to somehow get your attention a bit more(?)

I remember years ago ..., maybe it still is used but in movie theaters they would have one frame that would blink on super fast that would say "'drink Coke" or "eat popcorn" etc. whether it was true or no,t the reports I saw said that the sales of those things were definitely higher in movies that in those things in a frame or two. Apparently nobody really noticed them but it affected them anyway.?

Well, I don't see how those sounds are affecting sales, but then I don't know why they would be put in there. This I can't imagine it is a mistake. They somehow get in there. Somehow. someone thinks it serves a purpose. So I guess I don't like to manipulated by some effect .

I find that most people don't really key in to notice them. So I thought maybe my hearing was just more attuned to those frequencies. But since I have pointed this out to family members and some friends, they now tell me they do frequently notice it.

The one that really irritates me and is not subliminal at least in this way,.. is the Progressive Insurance commercial with "Flo" and her fellow motorcycle riders in kind of a desert setting, and the guy who has the only car there, and near the end of the commercial the car loudly starts to beep like it's being stolen.

Maybe I'm becoming or have become a curmudgeon, actually I'm thinking about writing a book or even a booklet of all the things that irk me ,...most of them are not too serious. Today I added to my notebook for the future, about people that you hold the door open for in a public building, and they not only don't acknowledge you but purposely, doesn't even look your way. Yesterday I added people who say the word,.. Say in a sentence,.. wait a "seconant" rather than the word ..second.. I guess it's a small one.but I hear highly paid national TV anchors say it.. And then there are people who, and I guess it's a regional thing, but they must be pretty highly educated to be in their position, who can't say the word

" I " referring to themselves but say the word "Ah".as in " Ah like ice cream" ,.. This includes a few presidents on both sides of the aisle. Well,.. " I gota million of um",... Maybe it should be named a Curmudgeon's Book of Observations or something like that. Even certain words, not technically wrong but seems to me over used,.. Like most the time people using the word surreal. Its not necessarily wrong But hey that's just me. I'm sure I probably irritate a lot of people also, like my writing style of grammar, spellings ,.and my purposely wrongly used punctuation's etc. --66.30.xx.xxx

One thing I like to do is cast YouTube from my phone onto my tv, and just watch videos that interest me. When I was planning a vacation for the family, I'd binge on all the videos that were relevant to that destination. Or if I wanted to learn more about a certain thing, I'd watch an endless series of videos about that thing, before coming up with a new thing to learn about.

It's nice to have such super-nichey programming available. Especially since I'm not normally still enough in one place to focus on a normal episode, let alone a movie. When I am that still (and my hands are free)-- I'm usually reading as well. :)

I do have some DVDs of Season 2 of Murder She Wrote I want to tackle, though. :) I usually do that when I'm ironing.

For years now I have kept a list I call "Words and phrases I'm tired of hearing".

It changes and I've found that it reads like a propaganda type of list where certain words and phrases creep into everyday talk. As I look it over once in a while, it becomes obvious to me that some of these look introduced in a deliberate way to affect how the population thinks and reacts.

I'm not talking about the regular shift of words the younger people do all the time as certain things become more of the "in thing"for them, but rather the ones that seem to be deliberately introduced into the language to control how we think.

Some that come to mind are "safe and effective", "truther",

"believe the science" , "deploreables" and words like that.

Sometimes it seems like I'm living in the movie "THEM". --172.58.xxx.xxx

Notice the radio commercials that repeated the first word like an eco. I wonder if the background sounds on the TV trigger anything like the Alexis monitoring devices that everyone thinks they don’t listen to your conversations. I am old enough to remember that you worried the government may put a bug in your home now they have everyone wanting one. --47.202.xxx.xx

GET OFF MY LAWN!

*Grins

I have a theory on why this happens: as we age, hopefully we gain wisdom. Wisdom says, "Yeah, I understand that everyone's got their opinion how how this should work, but I've tried dozens of those opinions, and this is objectively the best way to do it." But the young refuse advice and insist of figuring it out for themselves. It is a natural phenomenon, experienced by older folks since the dawn of recorded history.

One of the cool things about being a dual major English and History in college is I got to read some ancients texts that most survey classes skip over. Stuff from parents and elders whining about "lazy, disrespectful, sloppy young people these days who pay not attention to proper language or customs".

The text was written in Greek and dated to around 400 BC... to offer some perspective.

There's a reason why we have a stereo type for grumpy old people. I'll probably be there myself one day. Until then, I have beer and fast cars.

I will add to it with some songs on the radio.

More than once I have checked my mirrors again or turned the radio off because I heard a siren. Turns out there are a few musicians that think that is cool to put in the song. In the background. Just enough that you can catch it but not realize it is on the radio.

But I also have a pretty extensive list of things that irritate me. Over the years I have gotten to where I can let it slide, but it is still annoying. --107.147.xx.xxx

Subliminal messages. Used in TV and music.

I had gotten to a point of letting depression be the lead character in a show playing in the background in my mind. The things that we think about are very powerful and can be our best friend or our worst enemy. Please be careful on the things that you give attention to.

If you concentrate too much on things that are irritating to you, you will be irritated. I am slowly learning this. If I were to start focusing more on things that give me pleasure I might be a happier person. I should think on things that are pleasing more often. I find that the more I do that the better off I am. I use to be a happier person and have been looking back in time to see when things changed so I know how to change it back. I need a new show playing in the background.

Some of these things that you mention are a very interesting subject as, at one time, I fooled around with the subject of backmasking of music. However, I must be careful not to let it lead me in the wrong direction.

Think on these things which are pleasing..... is making more sence to me now. --73.190.xxx.xxx

Many of the things that I list that irritate me I say it with a bit of humor,..like OMG, what do some people do.

Some are more serious, today I added a semi serious one,..morning TV shows like the Today Show, Good Morning America etc. where there are a number of the people who start all talking at once and at least for me, I can't understand much of what is said.

But worst (and I have not watch them for very long) shows like the VIEW where those ladies seem to feel that their opinions are the most important in the room, and just talk louder while others are all talking.I have also seen this on those Sunday political panel shows where the panellist's have different opinions and "need" to be heard..doing the same... --66.30.xx.xxx

A byproduct of C-19 was a very limited amount of "New TV" on the tube. So as I watched stations MeTV and Ion, I noticed exact how trashy TV has gotten in a rather short amount of time.

Once upon a time, we watch the life and times of Mayberry - now days it is one of five versions of Jersey Shore because nothing is on the four shopping channels you have as part of your 100 stations you have.

I am thinking about cutting the cord with cable as even with 100 channels, there isn't much on TV. How did we survive having only four channels (sometimes only three depending on the rabbit ears). --24.101.xxx.xxx

They plan those sounds to get your attention. Notes that sound like peoples' phones, doorbells etc. I remember reading a brief article about such things and there was a warning like "wait until you hear what they are going to use in commercials to get your attention". You don't hear dogs or doorbells do you? When my mom was on hospice there were four dogs in the house as I was staying with her with my two. Doorbells and dogs barking in commercials were horrible for us. One day I was at an art store outside of Princeton and there was a salesman who had worked in advertising on Madison Avenue and another older fellow who was a higher up at an agence in NY. I had my dream opportunity to tell advertising people that if they put doorbells or barking dogs in a commercial, no one will hear the words they are trying to get across. I got right to the top on that one and since then, no barking dogs or doorbells. No need to thank me. --173.61.xxx.xxx
