This is a first after decades of Craigslist ads, I just had a hopeful applicant insist that I rent month to month because the craigslist ad, in the part that Craigslist appends to the ad, says the rental period is monthly.

So now I will be sure to put into my ads that it is a one year lease and not month to month.

I can actually see where the confusion comes from to a person who doesn't have much rental history --76.178.xxx.xxx

I have a lot of rental history, but on the landlord side.

I still don't know what "rental period" means. I can't find any basis to determine it.

is the rent, or amount of rent.

But what is "rental period"?

Actually, it comes from the word "periodic" in terms of a process which is repeated over-and-over, and the "period" means the interval between repeats of the periodic process.

Most states consider a MTM rental to be just that, a rental for one month, which is renewed every month by payment of rent for the new month. Based on convenience to both parties, termination of agreement usually requires some advance notice. But the "rental period" is the interval between the repeated 1-month rentals and thus, the "rental period" is 1 month.

Bit I don't think that that's what either Craigs List or Oregon Woodsmoke have in mind. Someone ought to point this out to Craigs List, to change the caption of their question from "Rental Period" to "Length of Rental", or maybe "Duration of Lease" with a check box for MTM.

Craigslist has ads for daily rentals, weekly rentals, and monthly rentals. So that is what they are trying to sort out.

This is the first time it has caused confusion (I think). But we all know that the majority of tenants don't actually read the ads.

At any rate, I changed my ad so it should be clarified.

You have to give him credit for reading the add, that's 10X better than most. I'm surprised craigslist still works for you, it's nothing but dregs and spammers here. --74.194.xxx.xxx

I think CL and Moshe are correct. "Rental period" is the recurring time between payments (monthly) and "rental term" is how long the lease is in effect, usually 1 year. --107.141.xx.xxx
