Today's headline:

Workforce Marijuana tests highest in 25 years.

Real estate and leasing agents - 5.2% tested positive for MJ.

Found it. Quest Diagnostic data from 2021, it appears -- came out recently.

I'm not sure how much I trust this data. I mean, I think the testing is accurate -- but I don't know how they got their pool of people to test. Here's some "surprising" results in the same study...

Yes, Real Estate and leasing people were at 5.2%.

People in Construction? 4.6%

I call bull on that, sorry.

Also, note that this is people who purposely took a urine test and tested positive. In other words, people not smart enough to pass a urine test! :)

I think that explains the Construction people being so low -- they know that their jobs depend on it in many cases. The ones that are highest appear to be from jobs where no one probably cares much if they fail.

In other words, ACTUAL USAGE is MUCH higher than these rates, of course. These are just people who had to take a test that they knew about and tested positive for weed.

My daughter has been trying to hire auto service techs for entry level positions at $18 an hour for some time. No experience needed, they provide excellent training. Nobody can pass drug screening! --72.135.xxx.xx

Supposedly there was a test developed that can determine if weed use is current, as in person is under the influence now, rather than just catching if a person has used at all in last several weeks. Don't know if this is true at all, as I gleaned this from a facebook argument years ago, when I had a facebook account. IF such a test exists and is reliable, it sure could help some employment situations.

Weed use being illegal still in most areas, some companies could/ would still want zero levels, but others could accept absolute sobriety while on the clock, do what you will on your own time.

Note: I'm not for or against any of this. Just a realist, I guess. --72.135.xxx.xx

One of my sons is a supervisor for a large, local, respected, in business for decades, commercial construction company.

Their only requirements are you cannot drive anything requiring a CDL. If you are hurt on the job you must take a test immediately... not sure what the consequences would be if positive but I'm guessing that's up to the workman's comp carrier, not the employer. --98.237.xxx.xx

Nicole, that’s my daughter’s issue. She works for a rental car company, and her service techs often have to drive vehicles from one branch location to another. So, insurance liability, not just workman’s comp, but, if involved in an auto accident on the road. That is where a test that can differentiate between currently under influence, as we have with alcohol, could help. ( obviously, one substance remains in our system while no longer having direct impairment effect. The other is out of the system quicker. Though, a lifestyle of heavy use of either…. But that’s different.) --172.59.xx.xxx

It is hard to imagine an effective leasing agent who is a stoner. A leasing agent has to produce.

As for the survey percentage of drug user being too low, I require bank statements with my application. So far, I have seen 2% of bank statements that show any purchases made at the marijuna stores. --149.76.xxx.x

Busy---marijuana use is illegal throughout the entire USA under federal law. The federal gov't currently minimally enforces that law, which degrades the Rule of Law. --73.141.xxx.xxx

There's a lot of hysteria around marijuana use. About half the US population has access to legal recreational marijuana.

Who cares if a real estate agent takes a gummy to go to sleep. People drink alcohol and no one cares. --68.46.xx.xxx

Don, I believe in states' rights. A lot of things that federal government gets involved in, that should be determined at the state level.

But, mostly, I don't care what people do on their own time, within confines of their homes. That's why I'm not so into rules governing tenant behavior. Too much fuss, in my book! --72.135.xxx.xx

The real problem is that the rules in place are not enforced for anything, cell phone use while driving stopped being enforced, people now have dark tinted windshields, w tf? And petty crime goes unabated, stores have policies against 'catching' thieves. Getting high behind the wheel is in this not so Grey area. You might school me, but AFAIK there is no test for weed that can differentiate between active high and baseline use. Even if they don't get high a significant portion don't subscribe to the work ethic we grew up with. --172.59.xxx.xxx

Busy--I too believe in states' rights. I also believe in the Rule of Law. That means that laws should be transparent and easy to understand and follow. We should not have things forbidden in practice but legal under a simple reading of the law, and we should not have things allowed that are forbidden under a simple reading of the law. The Fed. Gov't should either enforce the mj laws or repeal them. --73.141.xxx.xxx

What agent would sit still for such a requirement. Is the same standard be a test for opioid s?

Maybe teachers should have the same testing

They can do field sobriety tests like they do for alcohol and can tell if you are under the influence. I watched one once when a girl smashed my kids car in my drive.

I agree that the feds should enforce it or remove it. I do not partake. But when I have a tenant that does and it bothers a tenant that doesn't it becomes an issue for me. Unless they get a police report on it I guess my hands are tied. I still tell those that do it to keep it under wraps.

Brad, That would be interesting if they tested tenants. Especially if it meant not getting the gov handouts like S8. Never gonna happen tho. --107.147.xx.xxx

If we tested applicants we might identify the ones who make appropriate income but never seem to have the rent.

And I agree - real estate and lease agents is an odd group to be testing.
