I would like to build a wooden patio cover for the backyard with wood/lumber to protect from sun and rain.

I want something permanent and not the aluminum/fabric awnings.

The size is 8 ft x 12 ft and slanted from the house with gutter draining the rainwater away.

Work involves installing four posts 4x4 and one 2x6 board attached to the brick wall where the 12 rafters of 2x4 would be attached. The roof will have plywood covered with roofing material. Directing the gutter involves some challenges but the guy says he can figure this out.

The work involved digging for the four 4x4 posts and drilling holes through the brick wall to attach the 2x6 boards of 12 ft and attaching rafters. Also, some electrical wirings need to be redirected.

Is the project for a handyman or I should go with the construction company.

I will provide all materials that would be around $1000.

Labor estimate is about $3000.

Is it a fair quote for labor?

Thanks.

$3000 for a day's work seems way too much for me. Even 2 days. It's basic carpentery and easy roofing. $400. sounds more reasonable. --97.85.x.xx

The guy claims it will take about a week or less. --165.123.xxx.xxx

3k for labor seems pricy, but I think $400 is low, maybe 1k for a contractor, $800 handyman. Is this w/ a permit? You prolly want a permit for a deck, esp. if this is not your home. --67.240.xx.xx

So you're OK paying someone $3000 labor for a week or less of work? Doesn't that sound a little ridiculous? --108.201.xx.xx

Seems like you are adding value and improving the property... Cost $3k. Sounds ok for me. --172.59.xxx.xxx

I wouldn't be able to get anyone out for $300. Labor prices vary around the country. Here it is $80 an hour for a handyman and the handyman will only do easy jobs for that price, so I probably couldn't get him to dig post holes or mix cement for any amount of money. --76.178.xxx.xxx
