Well it happened again, a tenants 5 year old locked mom out of the bathroom on purpose. Little Johnny, not his real name did not know old landlord Jim has a door unlock tool or a tiny screwdriver to open locked bathroom doors in a clothes closet or linen compartment near each bathroom.

My landlord mentor taught me to do this years ago.

I thought every tenant knows to poke a skewer or such in the hole to pop the lock. I used to have tenants that put sm sliding deadbolts on doors, and I always removed them. Now I have better tenants. --172.59.xxx.xxx

Small potato----Some doorknobs have a hole to put a rod in to release the lock, like you describe. Others have a tiny slotted screw that you turn; that is what they are referring to above. --73.141.xxx.xxx

I hate the knobs with the tiny hole in the center.

Now I only use the ones with the slot you can turn with a coin - or most anything - on bedrooms and bathrooms

It stops someone from just walking in in you, but is easy to unlock in an emergency.

However, since you still use them, that is a terrific idea - to keep it on site. --68.229.xxx.xxx

I use the privacy locksets DJ described, coin or similar to open - think dumb tenant - really dumb. Little Johnny jokes are kinda funny when tangled in with schoolyard lessons based on gravity. --76.190.xxx.xxx

A clever 5 year old can outsmart just about anybody. You know the old joke, if you can't get the child-proof lid open, go and find a child to open it for you. --76.178.xxx.xxx

I remember getting a panicked call from my wife at work a few years ago. 2 year old went in the bathroom, shut the door and opened the vanity drawers. This blocked the door from being opened. He eventually closed the drawers. The door jam still has marks on it from trying to use a utensils to push the drawers shut. --68.46.xx.xxx

If I have to use a special tool to unlock the door, that is called a key! I taped that goofy tool in the hallway by the doors. Very short time later it was gone. For that family, I put closet knobs on the bedroom, replaced the bathroom knob with the knob DJ described.

Since then, all bedroom, bathroom knobs can be unlocked with coin, fingernail, butterknife. No more smashed, split doorstop trim. --70.92.xxx.xxx
