Have a house built in th 1970's have had 2 bedrooms in last 2 yrs with sagging ceilings just tore ceilings and replaced
drywall and worked fine. Now have some other places in house with sagging ceilings . Lot of work to repair. I saw an article that said in 70's they started using glue to hold ceiling up and small nails and tha is why they sagged over
time.. The ceilings I had used very small nails . When I did ceilings I used sheet rock screws and worked well but lot of work. The article I saw said use pcv wood and drywall screws and just screw in to rafters and that will work Has anyone heard of this . Thanks --173.47.xxx.xxx |

Are your ceiling joists on 24 inch centers or 16 inch centers? --97.85.x.xx |

Humidity also can cause this as well as other factors. Need more info. --97.85.x.xx |

1/2" drywall on 24" center ceilings will sometimes sag. You can upgrade to 5/8" to avoid this. --67.184.xxx.xxx |

Furring strip technique.
Was used to finish out ceiling drywall, at the joints,
instead of tape and mud. Mostly in garages. --24.183.xxx.xxx |

For plaster ceilings I use ceiling buttons to repair. you might be able to get these to work but you'll have to feather out the patch a bit. If the joist spacing to far apart above then that is a harder problem, ceiling buttons won't fix. --172.59.xxx.xxx |

Do you mean PVC / vinyl "wood product? I don't know how that would be used.
Screws are definitely the correct fastener - into solid wood, like a rafter or nailing flange around the edge of the room. Make sure all the edges are secured to something solid.
You might want to add screws pro-actively to any ceiling you think is about to sag, to help prevent it.
For any ceiling already so far gone that you just remove it and start fresh: If your ceiling joists are more than 16" OC: Thicker drywall could help, but it is HEAVY to work with, especially overhead.
You can run furring strips perpendicular to the ceiling joists - and closer together. Then screw to the furring strips. --68.229.xxx.xxx |

Back in the late 1960's we used to use ring shanked drywall nails to secure SR to the framing. On the walls we nailed 16" oc & on the ceiling we doubled nailed 12" oc. Double nailing with the nails about 3/4 of an inch apart made sure that the sheet was tight to the ceiling. In the New England area we generally fasten 1x3 strapping 16" oc to the ceiling joists & fasten the SR / BB to it rather than the framing. --72.93.xxx.xx |
