Anyone of you guys in the northern area see them last night?

Where I live they are rarely seen but last night they were very noticeable,..MAYBE again tonite if no clouds,..check with your local weather people as they usually get reports if its likely.

A long time ago,..when I was a kid the were spectacular but I have not see anything like that again,.

Big sun emission this week. I think it was a coronal mass ejection but I will check on spaceweather. That was what froze TX a few years ago. I will go check. --71.188.xx.xxx

Seen as far south as N. Carolina. A CME just missed us but the disturbance opened a crack in the earth's magnetic field which happens this time of year. Here's a quote: SEVERE GEOMAGNETIC STORM: Forecasters did not see this one coming. On March 23-24, auroras spread into the United States as far south as New Mexico (+32.8N) during a severe (category G4) geomagnetic storm--the most intense in nearly 6 years. The cause of the storm is still unclear; it may have been the ripple effect of a near-miss CME on March 23rd. if you go look at the site just add dot com to the words spaceweather, there is also a phenomenon called Steve. So if your name is Steve or you know one it's a real big event. --71.188.xx.xxx

Interesting this morning driving into the office, my 2 favorite radio stations were almost not hearable,..very statically,..which is unusual.

Also very unusual my GPS was not working.

From the solar flair? --96.236.xxx.xx

So nothing specific was mentioned happening today but the magnetic shield for the earth is open since the Coronal Mass Ejection went by and thankfully missed us, so lots of solar energy coming in because the shield is down. --71.188.xx.xxx

GPS is impacted by solar flares because the flares mess with their satellites. Also, the earth's axis and hence the poles have been in motion for about the past 10-20 years and that causes satellite problems. --216.23.xxx.xx

Thanks for the info about the pole motion. Read in a climatology text that there is a couple of degree rotation that takes 13 years to go through. So besides the eleven year sun max to minimum strength and the twenty year dance between the gravity of the sun and moon, there is this 13 year issue with the poles. So one year our spot on the earth can be up to 200 miles farther north or south to the angle of the sun. So that's why some years for each of us are more bitterly cold or dry or hotter than others. So NJ gets Massachusetts weather sometimes and Virginia weather other times. --71.188.xx.xxx

Before this goes off the page, the guy that owns Spaceweather lives in a trailor on a mountain, I forget which state, but he just had to be airlifted off the mountain due to avalanche danger and he and his sled dogs could not get out. If you are concerned about long term weather, check out his site. Sunspots predict warmer sun. And then there are the pieces of the sun and gases that fly off and cause us grief. --173.61.xxx.xxx
