I have some duplexes that are 2 or 3 bedroom and all are 2 baths. I was thinking that when the time comes to replace the tub in the bath attached to the master bedroom, I would instead put in a pan for a walk-in shower. In all of these properties, there is a second bathroom and I would keep a tub in that bathroom for children.

What are your thoughts and where can I find the standard size pan for doing this kind of job.

Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

If you have a tiled shower floor on second floor, or pier and beam, reinforce subfloor so it won't move or shift. If not, you can expect to see a few tile cracks running the length of the shower floor. --108.69.xxx.xxx

great idea. all the home centers will have pans in the same footprint as the tub your pulling. unless you've got odd old tubs the drain plumbing will line up nicely. this is a good time to replace the mixer valve. there are panelized wall systems that go up VERY fast and are well designed for keeping clean. if you have slightly better grade shacks perhaps large format tiles are in order. i recently put up some 1x2 foot tile in a stall over a fiberglass pan and it looks great. get a white or light color. i bought black and regret it. be ready for a price shock on the door systems... --75.80.xx.xx

I think that's a fine idea. Just decide your policy on shower curtains and make sure to get a base with a textured floor to prevent slip and falls. Also consider some blocking behind the walls and make drawings of where the blocking is so that if you ever need/want to install grab bars for ADA or seniors you can do so easily. I don't know where to get a pan.

Also, wax the walls when new to minimize gunk sticking to them...and do this at each tenant turnover. Don't apply wax to the base...safety issue as it gets slippery. --99.92.xxx.xxx

Set it up as handicapped accessable if possible. As the boomers are getting older, these setup will attract those that need them over places that do not have them. --97.85.x.xx

These lo profile tubs are nice, they are only worth a half bath because they are not deep enough for a bath, the glass doors are very dangerous unless you get a zipline to escape the broken glass unless you shower wearing good boots. --76.190.xxx.xxx

If your planning to tile the walls I would suggest a shower stall base from EL Mustee. Suggested by two tile contractors. In fact I just purchased one for a Bath remodel with 12x24 tiles on the surrounding walls.

Also you may consider a Vikrell-Kohler Sterling shower stall - with 3 part surround. I put one in back 2008 in one of my rentals. Still looks great.

I like the idea, especially if it's the master bathroom. What I'd like to know is where to find the ones with the 8" curb that Brad 20K talks about putting into his. That would help a lot with preventing water from leaking onto the floor. Shower curtains only, no doors. --104.230.xxx.xxx

We have been doing this for awhile, it’s our “edge”. We go full resort style though. Rainfall showerhead and fixed custom glass. You won’t ever get any leaks that way and it looks like a million bucks. --68.191.xx.xx

Said this on another thread .... been pulling the tub (old peeps can't make the step) and dropping in the shower pan from HD. Then put a short wall (2.5 ft) and move the plumbing to the short wall.

Drain lines up ... no issues there. Tile the bath floor and use o low pressure setting on the shower valve.

Easy-peasy. Minimal "splash" NO CURTIAN. NO DOOR. --198.168.xx.xxx
