Just a heads up, I got my 401k rolled over from my old company to my current brokerage, for free, online with a company called Capitalize (it may be hicapitalize or Capitalize money).

I couldn't believe what a good job they did and it cost me zero (as far as I know :-) They spoke with me on the phone, filled out the documents, emailed for me to sign and contacted the old and new companies and now it's in my new account. I tried to do it myself a few years back, but couldn't for some reason.

I don't know how they're making money, charging nothing for the service, but FWIW :-) --100.8.xxx.xxx

Just to note it, HiCapitalize makes their money by selling your data. (If a business gives you something for free, then YOU are the product that they sell to make money.)

Their Privacy policy makes it clear that they collect (and then can sell) data related to you, including:

-Name, email, physical address, phone number

-Financial information including balances

-Age, gender, Country

-Interests, preferences, favorites

-Employment data including retirement plans used

It then goes on to state who they can share that data with:

- Service Providers who do "marketing and advertising"

- Vendors and "other parties" for "analytics and advertising related purposes"

- Affiliates to use your data "for their own internal purposes"

- Partners to offer "co-branded services, selling or distributing our products, or engaging in joint marketing activities"

It's likely not a big deal -- but that is how they make their money, in general. By selling you to others and/or showing you ads based on your data.

Rolling over an IRA should be free: I've done it many times over the years. Contact the new company, get their paperwork, turn it over to the old company (or vice versa, ask the old company what they need) and just submit what they need. It will be in your new account in several days (depends on old company. Equity Trust, for instance, takes forever to turn over the funds to Charles Schwab.) --50.82.xxx.xxx

I've never heard of any company charging a fee for rolling your 401k or IRA.

John got me thinking.

Always read the fine print and between the lines. Nothing is truly free, not even freedom.

you should no have needed a middleman to do this.

You should have been able to fill out a direct transfer form from vendor #2 and vendor #1 might have had a request form to complete. Why wasn't this course of action available to you? --172.59.xxx.xx

Small potatoes, it's like your taxes, you don't need a middleman to do that either, but many of us get help to do it, and one way or another, we pay for this help. --100.8.xxx.xxx

As for selling your data, if they do, they would be doing what Facebook, Google, Paypal, the credit bureaus, etc. have been doing for a long time. No surprise there. --100.8.xxx.xxx

BillW: Right, same as FB and the others, of course. You just said "I don't know how they're making money, charging nothing for the service", so I filled you in.

Also, to me, there is a big difference between a company selling all of my FINANCIAL information versus FB selling that I "liked" Twix bars one day...

I made this post to help others who may need help with a rollover. I tried two time to rollover my Mass Mutual account to Fidelity and failed both time. Capitalize made it happen. The person I spoke to over the phone at Capitalize was competent and helpful. I do know there's nothing free in this world, I just made the post as I thought others might find it helpful. --100.8.xxx.xxx

Bill did they tell you WHY it failed? At which end did it fail (From or To?)

I'm curious because I've done it many times over the years without an intermediary. --50.82.xxx.xxx

As I vaguely recall, on the first try, I was told that Mass Mutual had fees to roll it over and I needed to wait a few years to avoid the fees. On the second try, it was something about some information that Fidelity needed, but they never responded to my request for clarification on what that information was, but again, it was a few years ago, so I don't remember clearly.

I was quite pleased when Capitalize did it. As I said, they were very professional and helpful.

And BTW, on their website they say:

How is Capitalize free? How does Capitalize make money?

If you choose to open up an IRA with one of the providers on our platform then we may be compensated. This helps us keep the service free for users, but none of those providers is ever allowed to impact the content on our site. It also never affects the fees you pay as a customer. If you’ve ever used a site like Nerdwallet, Credit Karma or Lending Tree then you’ll be familiar with this model. Our reputation depends on you feeling like we provide an honest, independent product. --100.8.xxx.xxx
