Bummer, just got note from tenant in my B bldg. that the oven on a frigidaire range has been taking longer to come on, smells like gas and there is a loud boom when they turn it on. The most likely cause is the igniter unit. That part is $170ish or more. New slide in ranges are $900-1200 and up. It seems straightforward and 'm inclined to repair it myself since a service call is at least $200 just to show. I was wondering what other issue it could be if it isn't the igniter? The thought of having to wrangle delivery of a new range is not appealing. If I do replace it what 30" models do you recommend? and would you put a free standing model in to replace a slide in one?

If a hot surface igniter there is a way to test where the current flow can be measured. Igniters comely fail on gas stoves. Even though the igniter is coming on it may not be hot enough to start burner. Top of line gas stoves use spark ignition which is the same for the burners. Have in the past changed out a igniter where if going to attempt then view some videos on You Tube where turn off gas and power. There is usually a lot of corrosion which has to cleaned off terminals. A gas oven will have two igniters one upper and lower burner. --68.69.xxx.xxx

first very first thing is call tenant and tell them under no circumstances use the stove until it is repaired. Shut off gas going to this stove NOW.

It is the ignitor or aka glow plug. Easy to change. Is it round or rectangle? and brand. 170.00? you looked on amazon?

There 26.00. Now compare 26.00 to 900.00?

With gas off and unit unplugged. Pull the racks out. Now if you can lyft the front door off. Open the door slightly and then pick up --- the stove door should come off the 2 hinges. Now take out the burner cover-- usually 2 screws holding iy in place. You'll see the burner rail and toward the back will be the glow bar. That's the target. 2 screws hold it on the bar and 2 wires go to it. The new glow plug will have 2 wire twist nuts and heat shrink. Tie the new wires using the parts. Place the glow plug in place and screw it back on. DO NOT touch the glow plug itself. Just use the outter cover-- either round or rectangle. --108.239.xx.xx

Shop a little harder, I get 4 for 100bux at that -e- place, fits many - I don't provide appliances but I do some side jobs - keep them in the foam packing as they are fragile. --76.190.xxx.xxx

Robert stop being a weenie. Order the round or square ignitor from amazon. Get there and fix this. Its a simple part change.

Yes they glow red but the amps draw is probable not enough to open the gas valve flapper.

We keep a round and rectangle on the work van. --108.239.xx.xx

yes it's a rectangular igniter, not a glow plug (which I have replaced on a different oven). I'm assuming I want the lower one since it is attached to the burner tube. Is the upper igniter for broiling?

So an amazon/ ebay knockoff part for $26 bucks is not going to fail out of the box? If not I'll try one. Doesn't build confidence that all listings have the same pic of a used item w/ burn marks.

Q- all the videos show 4 leads, 2 to the plug and 2 making a circuit between the igniter and safety valve. All the OEM replacement parts for the model I have just show the 2 wires for the plug. Some of the knockoff ones look right but are not listed for that model. What am I missing. --67.240.xx.xx

That is why I prefer the old pilot lights. Alas, I learned they are no longer made. Maybe there is a version someone makes for Amish homes. --73.141.xxx.xxx

its 2 wire and just the part from the valve to the ignitor.

We splice it in and leave the original wires connected as is because sometimes those wires are welded on the studs.

With 63 SFH's and half having gas stoves-- I've never seen an upper glow plug??????

The broil selector on the top of the stove has HI MED LOW and uses the same gas rail as the oven lighter bar.

WOW never knew that. My rentals must really be low class. I only have the one lower element and it does both bake and broil heat.

Still should be able to trouble shoot which one. Also we just splice the new one in we don't go for the canon plug. The universal one should work. Be sure to see where your 2 attach screw's connect to bar. ( I would get one each and return the one not used) --108.239.xx.xx

I would suggest having the lower replacement on hand, people bake more potatoes and cakes than broiler use. just keep it in a safe place, very fragile part packed in foam. --76.190.xxx.xxx
