We have an old kitchen sink that we want to keep as it goes with the age of the building but it looks shabby on the inside,.

Has anyone found a product hat does a fair job of making it look better? thinking of light sanding and using a spray can of,..Maybe white epoxy? --96.236.xxx.xx

I've done it a few times but wouldn't recommend it for long term. Kitchen sink is particularly difficult since it gets a lot of use. Bathroom sink, not so much. I used Rust oleum Tub and Tile refinishing 2 part kit.

And yes the fumes are awful so I wouldn't do it without using one of those special air masks that make you look like you are a star wars character. --64.246.xxx.xx

Is it a cast iron, country kitchen, apron sink?

I don't blame you for wanting to save it.

It would be worthwhile to pay a professional refinishing company to do it, to get a smooth & durable finish.

Those kits maple leaf mentioned are terrible. --68.229.xxx.xxx

If you really want it to last then pull it out of the cabinet and take it to an auto paint shop and have them paint and oven cure the finish. It will be nearly as durable as the original finish. --209.205.xxx.xx

In a larger apartment complex from the 1920's, all of the built in cast iron sinks looked aged and chipped. Instead of breaking out the tile counter top to fit a stainless steel sink replacement, I made a mold of the old sink openings and had a company fabricate replacement drop on top of the old sinks. Using a special drain adapters, this make things easy. --47.147.xxx.xxx

Robert J, sounds like a good idea. What did you make a mold of the old sink with? Do you remember the name of the company you used? The name of the special drain adapter? How have the new sinks held up and over what period of time? Any concerns about leaking at the special adapter part and the original sink holding stale water that is not visible? Would love to see pictures if you have any handy.

Thanks in advance. --181.214.xxx.xxx

Sir Walter,

I am going to go out on a limb here and say you will not get the info you seek.

Zero, Maybe, maybe not. Cie la vie. :-) The concept is interesting in theory.

It did lead me to stumble upon an option called tub casting, which was not an option I saw the last time I looked at refinishing a tub or sink. Basically thicker paint with a longer lifespan. Paint is not sprayed and cost is higher $$. Will leave that to someone else to try out. --181.214.xxx.xx
