I have been hoarding a large sum of money waiting for the anticipated foreclosures etc to start.

I do not trust the govt or FDIC. I lived thru multiple recessions and the Great Recession, and saw all those folks who lost their rentals and retirement accounts.

If I pull my cash out where should I put it?

Safety deposit box like in the movies?

Buy a giant immovable safe?

Mattress?

Tomato cans buried in the yard?

Inside the wall studs like OZARK?

Crawl space like Walter White?

As a Jeweler, I know not to trust Safety Deposit Boxes. I had a box in the International Jewelry Center. One day while going to my locker box in the vault room the new guard allowed a group of foreign (gang) business men to enter the vault when I was to my vault. I told the to get the "H" out of the vault -- one person at a time. They did not listen as they pulled out their weapons. I had my Model "A" UZI with a 25 round clip. They left after I sprayed the room. As they were running away, one dropped his piece. The guard picked it up and gave it back to him. I arrested the guard on the spot. The bank, Bank of America was closed for the rest of the day.

I have floor safes in some of my rentals. 3 feet deep double Decker floor safes cemented in the ground. Then I have a removable section of hard wood floor over it. I just tell my tenants that I need to stop by and check out a plumbing leak. They I ask to use the bathroom thru a bedroom and go to the close and have access to my safe. Always keep a gun in each safe. --47.147.xxx.xxx

Good question, and I'd bet many of u are thinking the same thing.

Fed gave themselves full access to all safe deppsit boxes and also self storage units long ago. Believe it, they will also go after private boxes as well if they want.

Big safes attract attention and cot ###- Maybe a gun safe?

Others seem impractical.

Keeping quiet about it is the word. As far as I think, if certain people blab to friends, kids talk, etc, then word gets out that you've got a stash, then you're a target.

Also what about the govt talk of moving to digital currency stuff?

Silver and gold have some allure but gold, esp seems a bit impractical for it would need to be either converted or find a willing receiver (depending on what happen, that might not be that hard, but it is a bet for sure).

Decisions, decisions.

Fer sure (val speak) it makes sense to have several locations though. --97.85.x.xx

Do some nice upgrades on the rentals that you can expense. Then increase rent for more cash flow.

I bought a ranch and went into to clear the land and harvested 3 semis full of walnut that went to the saw mill. It was a nice payday. Farm land is great.

Anything kept at home is at risk in a house fire. It is at risk from thieves. Buried money gets lost or wet and decomposes. I'm not at all sure that gold is such a good idea. It's easy to buy it but how do you sell it if the market is glitchy.

Of course real estate is no longer safe. The federal government seems to be putting a lot of thought into how they can seize it. My entire life up until Covid real estate was a safe place to have wealth, and that has changed, --76.178.xxx.xxx

Jason,

It is one of my strongest hopes that I am completely wrong, that there is nothing to worry about and in the future I may lay back and laugh at the apparent folly of thinking that there were problems ahead. That, afterwards, I will have plenty of things to donate to the food pantry and other charities.

If I am wrong, I will gladly take the ridicule and "I told you so's" from those who said I was paranoid or in a movie.

On the other hand, if I am right and things get bad, what will those who ridicule me and those like me do when hard times come and they are not prepared? Will they come to my door asking for food and help or will they come demanding these things and willing to take them from me?

In time, when this plays out, I hope to sit with others and share a drink and hopefully laugh about my follies. That or share that drink with those who were ready for the hard times and made it through.

I'd be a fan of dollar cost averaging into rentals, so, just keep expanding, though you'll do fewer when prices are higher, more if things tank.

And, if the remodeling on your OWN house isn't done, now is a good time for that. Then wifey will be all on board when its full steam ahead on picking up foreclosures. I also like the idea of getting the current rentals in tippy- top shape, so there is time and energy freed up with the crew for rehabs when those sore, old properties hit the markets in a flood. --70.92.xxx.xxx

So as a general practice I keep 10 gals of gas and a few thousand dollars available in the event of a temporary unforeseen disaster.

Where do I stash the cash? It is hidden very well inside the house. So why do I keep a limit amount in that emergency fund? One house fire could wipe it out. Also I want the money working for me - so this act like my safety blanket. I like sleeping soundly at night.

First, FDIC will cover $250,000 per depositor so if you have a family of 4 you effectively have $1M in coverage if you use all 4 names on the accounts. FDIC is backed by the government so If you are afraid of losing that then you shouldn't have US dollars or any product backed by US dollars, they will be worthless as well. So your cash stashed in the wall will only be worth the insulation value if that happens. At that point, gold, silver, guns, and bullets are recommended. You might also invest in a bunker and a few years of food.

I believe the only real way to store treasure is to put it somewhere other than this world. Mat 6:19-21 --209.205.xxx.xx

Also, to clarify, it is $250,000 "per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category." That last part often gets left out. Different "ownership categories" would be things like a single-person account vs a joint account vs a trust account vs a business account.

So, you could have $250k in a individual savings account, $250k in a trust account, $250k in a joint account with your wife, and $250k in a business corporation account. That entire million would be covered by FDIC insurance even at the same bank and without going through 4 family members. Add more family members and you could bump that up even more, of course.

Or, heck, if you've got $1MM to put somewhere, just put $250k each in four different banks. It'd all be FDIC insured and might even help for those of you worried about a run on certain banks.

Credit Unions also offer similar protection under a different plan (NCUA). --67.209.xxx.xx

I begin using credit unions back in 2008 mainly because I didn't want to support any banks given the bank bailout. Although I didn't know at the time, that was a good move from the standpoint of securing financing for my real estate purchases.

I think short-term treasuries (and longer term treasuries once the fed stops tightening) are the ticket right now. Government protection is already built right in. Once the tightening cycle ends, longer term treasuries should return well. I think generally that lending various governments money is going to be the new thing particularly as foreign buyers buy less treasuries.

The current situation was created by the fed's ZIRP policy IMO and the current situation will result in even more consolidation of banking interests. What I don't understand is why these banks held onto long dated treasuries knowing that interest rates were being pushed up. It was a easy way to make money when rates were low but I'm not understanding why they didn't move to shorter duration especially since the fed signaled this well in advance.

These bank failures affect the mega wealthy primarily. Small fry like me have limited exposure. --209.122.xx.xxx

If you can't trust the government with money in a BANK backed by the FDIC, then that would mean something so terrible happened that cash would be worthless anyhow. So storing it anywhere else (like your backyard in a tube) really doesn't make sense either.

An FDIC insured bank account (or multiple accounts/banks if the money is over $250k) is the most logical option. If THAT fails, then all heck has broken loose -- and, again, your cash would be worthless anyhow.

Where can one use large sums of cash without raising eyebrows? Let's say you store $ 50,000 in cash in your backyard. Once you retrieve it, how can you use it? It's easy to use for smaller purchases like gas or groceries, but few are taking cash for large purchases. The first concern would be counterfeit bills and a legitimate source of the money and inadvertently facing charges for money laundering. You wouldn't be able to introduce back into the banking system without raising eyebrows and currency reporting. In short, a bunch of cash in your backyard can only be used in a parallel cash economy that has shrunk to almost nothing. If one is concerned about safety of cash, best thing to do is short dated treasuries. Government guarantee is built in and is unlimited. --209.122.xx.xxx

And, with Regenerative Farming, it doesn't have to be a mega farm far from cities. Farm to table, so small parcels closer to markets are desirable. --70.92.xxx.xxx
