Finished the install on the new required 14 seer 4 ton unit in the rental.

14 seer requires a better A coil and larger service lines. Need 2-50ft runs AND USED 84 FT OF it. So not only is the Compressor changed but Evap and line set. Lucky we only had to do minor refit on top of furnace. HVAC tape is 60.00 a roil the line sets were 500.00 for 2rolls. Units were 3200.00. The new unit comes somewhat serviced but did need a little top off of 410A. Maybe a pound.

Tech guy charged me $750 for doing every thing. Hall off of old units included. He had 2 helpers doing the grunt work.

The new 14 seer units use 410A?

I thought they were changing the freon as well?

That will be next, so your new unit will be outdated soon. Hope not though. --98.40.x.xxx

yeah they changed -- no more R-22 which is what most of my units have.

There are many ways to change out R22 units but all are expensive. --108.239.xx.xx

The EPA has been against the chlorinated refrigerant since about 2001 because of the environment damage, there is a safe replacement m99 but you must replace the filter after flushing out the old oil. MYOB I hope you can locate this to save replacing everything. --76.190.xxx.xxx

Vee I general get the max life out of my units. A unit at say 6 or 7 yrs, in my opinion, could have the compressor changed out. They are still available. The 14 seer I just did was 24 or 25 yrs old and a 10 seer. Way past its prime in GA. So I guess what I'm saying is I have to watch each unit and make a decision as to rework or replace. Vee but isn't that what we do with waterheaters or dishwashers etc.. I'm not throwing parts at a waterheaters that's 11 or 12 yrs old and dishwashers we don't fix period-- motor goes-- its done. --108.239.xx.xx

New standard is complicated, but it is 15 SEER under the old rating and 14.2 under the new SEER 2 ratings.

IF you can find any 14 SEER units still in stock they are legal to install. My dealer told me an hour ago he has two left.

R410a is still the refrigerant for 2023, but we will be going to previously banned refrigerants in the near future. They are flammable.

Ironically, 80 percent furnaces are still legal to install. Go figure. --69.80.xx.xxx

gevans that makes 100% sense. we don't buy fuel for furnaces from China. Freon, other than r22, we buy all over. (not usa made) Did you know in MX R-22 $50.00 for 35lbs. --108.239.xx.xx

I put an 80% GFA furnace in my kids place this last year. It was going in the attic. Made more sense to use the lower efficiency unit rather than spend the money making an insulated box and drain and all that.

When they finally ban the lower efficiency units there will be a lot of extra money spent in the colder climates.

Coincidently today I just had an electric furnace and central unit installed in a rental. Place has ceiling cable heat. I opted for the heat strips. The old AC only unit was dead.

Just a ton and a half.

The guy is out there working up the bill. I pay same day in hopes it gets me better service. I asked him why the outside unit was running. Being naïve and all that.

He explains that the boss accidentally grabbed a heat pump but didn't want to spend the time driving it back and replacing it. So the next tenant will have a much better heat and cool source and I didn't spend the extra for it. Unless maybe I did.

All in the bill was $4550.00 --107.147.xx.xxx

zero--?? your rental go a heat pump and air handler with emergency heat strips for 4500.00. 1.5 ton -- how many btu's does the heat pump put out?

I'm not from IN but that seems to far north for a heat pump? --108.239.xx.xx

Will have to look when I get back there today. I know a lot of people have heat pumps around here.

The tech said this will work until 22 degrees then the heat strips will kick in. All I bought was an AC unit. I told him I would pay for heat strips as well. The apartment has ceiling cable heat. I figured the tenants would feel the warm air and be happier. Maybe not. I left all the ceiling heat alone. My back-up system I guess.

Sorry, I failed you yet again. The place had no electricity. I kept waiting on the utility guy to show and didn't go out to read the plate for the BTU.

He showed at 2:47 this afternoon. Temp inside dropped to 49. I couldn't paint. I really couldn't do much as it was an overcast day and hard to see inside. I kept busy and ran some other errands.

Might go back tomorrow. Hopefully I can remember then (or Monday). --107.147.xx.xxx
