I have been having a problem with people who live at a neighboring house parking on my property. I happened to be there when someone I have never seen before was parking right in my driveway. I asked them to move and I got a big fat “FU”. I reminded them that they can’t park on the property because they don’t live there. This guy goes nuts , starts screaming and threatening me. What gives? He’s parked in my driveway. Signs are properly posted. I should have just walked away but instead brought up the minor detail that he is technically trespassing. Cops told me to get bigger sign.

Just call the tow truck and have it towed, they will take care of it without drama on your part.

If it was properly posted and the cops told me to get a bigger sign I would have been asking to have their supervisor stop by. Geesh, do your job people.

What about a sign from a towing company. For our condo they put them up for free and monitor it along with us, cause they make money when they have to tow a vehicle. --172.56.xx.xxx

Rents,

Me? One reminder notice on the windsheild. That will get the residents and guest talking. Towed the next time.

I like the idea of signs from the towing co. The ones I have seen say "Call XXXX to pick up your car."

I suspect the "Get a bigger sign" is just a standard comment guys make when someone is ignoring a sign.

Another vote for tow company placing a sign. They know the legal language that's required too. --174.216.xx.xx

Our society has learned that the more aggressive you are, the more you can get away with. Tow company sign and call it a day. If you want, pay for them to do drivebys..record the plate and interaction. Cameras clearly showing the sign and tow company. --73.230.xxx.xx

I like the tow company sign and would go that route. The problem is the process of getting a tow here. I live about 20 minutes from the home. The security cameras ( or tenants) let me know when we have vehicle(s) that shouldn’t be parked there. Unfortunately, the cameras can’t zoom in enough to get the plate # in all areas of the property. I need the make, model and plate# and then I need to fill out a tow slip and physically bring it to the police station before any tow company will go over there. They won’t tow without it. So I have to go to the property and then the police station. I thought just asking the offender ( since I was there) was an easier solution. Now I have the plate # though so I can skip that step for this car. --174.192.xx.xxx

If a sign is needed, is this just a -no parking- sign? In Ohio a tow company can tow/store if the sign shows the phone number of the towing company. Last year I put signs up on both sides of a tree, after a couple cars were towed the parking violators had a brainstorm to cut down the tree, from nearby store footage this took a few weekends and when the tree fell it removed the feeder wires to the houses near there causing a lot of attention especially the drivers trying to get out of the muddy place they created. Can't fix stupid... --76.190.xxx.xxx

After the car is towed, keep a pepper spray handy. I've seen crazy behavior when they realize the car is towed after multiple warnings, which they have ignored. Watch Youtube videos on Parking Wars . . . --174.65.x.xxx

You have a screaming idiot trespasser. Worst kind. I vote for the towaway zone sign with the tow company phone number on it. Too dangerous. Local church goers, same block, would pull into my tenant's empty spot on the property. One time I caught it and called police and they came out and ticketed the driver. --71.188.xx.xxx

Why are you more upset about this than your tenant is? I wouldnt know if it was happening at one of my places and would assume my tenant was letting them park there --74.77.xx.xx

Is this a SFH? If it is, you may not want a "permanent" no-parking sign.

What about the next resident's car? Don't want that towed.

And a good resident may see a sign like that as indicating a potential problem - and not want to apply to live there.

If he made threats to you, you should have lead with that to the police. Any threat of physical, bodily harm to another person needs to be taken seriously. It is illegal and they could be arrested (or perhaps at least wake up/pay attention)

I'm also wondering if this is a regular thing, fifths neighbor is a homeowner or tenant, and he DID know who you were, right?

It's awfully hard to change a person's overall demeanor, and if he's a homeowner with this as his regular type of behavior......... well.......it might be hard to keep good residents there.

Good luck - most of all, stay safe! --68.229.xxx.xxx

I'm surprised that you need police approval to tow from posted private property. In my area the tow company can put up signs & handle the tow without any real police involvement. I believe that the tow company does notify the police with the towed vehicles info so they'll know it wasn't stolen.

I've been know to block in unauthorized vehicles with one of my extra cars or trucks. I've also noticed that sometimes something mysterious happens to 1 or 2 of the offending vehicles tires. During the winter I find it convenient for me to push a huge pile of snow in front of & behind these same inconsiderate parkers.

In my city, the tow truck driver must fill out a form at the police station before a vehicle is towed off of private property. --71.174.xxx.xxx

Block that car in trapping it until the tow truck comes. If they come outside - then explain to them that you didn't realize that they were allowed to park on YOUR property.

Thank them for getting the matter resolved before the tow truck arrived.

We've had this issue at a multi. Purchased a sign with the towing company info, posted prominently, and issued parking permit tags to all residents. One call to the tow company and they'll haul away any cars without permits.

It sounds like the procedure is a little different in your municipality. Could the tenants who are notifying you get the plate/make/model number for you? Do you have a handyman, or could you pay a tenant, to make that run to the police station for you? If not, make the investment of time. It won't take more than once or twice for the lesson to sink in. --104.230.xxx.xxx
