Has anyone ever done this? This is not for a tenant but for a handyman. He is older and seemly has no body in his life except for a brother who just had an operation,.and I can't reach. I'm more than 100 miles away and in calling him in the last few days,.he seems in bad shape,.does not talk well and says he can't stand w/o his legs buckling.

Yesterday he said he can't get off the couch to get food and running out of his bottled water,

I tried to get him to call an ambulance to take him to a hospital but he doesn't want to do that because he says he hasn't taken a shower and is naked,.also has been incontinent so I imagine that couch is quite a mess.

I think he is not thinking straight and so weak he doesn't want to do anything.

I'm thinking about calling the NYS police and asking for what I understand is a welfare check,..I don't know how that is done or if they do that,.

If the door is locked will they break in?

The guy is older and a very nice guy but I don't really know what is the best thing to do,.I have asked him before for a name of a friend I could call if there was an emergency and he always said no,..just his brother,...maybe,..but never gave me his name/number. --66.30.xx.xxx

You can also call the local Department of Social Services. They have an emergency person on call on the weekends. These people handle not only kids in crisis but provide adult protections too.

THEY may call the police for help getting in, but they will have services to offer beyond what the police can do.

Or call both, to ensure SOMEONE checks on him! --50.82.xxx.xxx

And, if the weather is Ok, by you, a drive over there would be good for both of you. Especially if you have someone to accompany you on the drive.

BTW, Goodwill frequently has incontinent pads and bags of adult disposable underwear. Economical prices. Also, often have walkers, shower chairs, other aids.

So glad you are caring for him. ( concerned.) --70.92.xxx.xxx

A few times when I set out to do a good deed, it come back to haunt me. Getting someone's car fixed so they can work and take a sickly child to the hospital for appointments. Never get paid back but seeing them go on vacations, buy big ticket items such as a new iPhone. Calling 911 for emergency care, only to get billed for the transportation to the Hospital (ambulance and transportation are different in this city).

So if you drive over to help this old handyman, then be prepared to shell out time, money, etc.

Once I helped my painter who broke his leg and couldn't work for months. I found out later that he owned his Duplex and allowed is adult daughter to live in the other unit for free. She should have helped out her dad and started to pay some rent when he couldn't work.

I suggest getting someone in the area - from a church, to check on him and deliver some food once a week. Once the vitamin D is depleted he will fade and be very painful for months of recovery after his diet is back on track. --76.190.xxx.xxx

Update

the police called back saying its a good thing that they went out,..he was laying on the floor and couldn't get up,..had no food or water in days,.(he said he had water but couldn't get food but I don't think he was telling me the truth as I kept telling him days ago he needed

to call someone or the rescue squad to take hi to the hospital, and he .resisted, saying he would probably be alright, and didn't want me to call anyone.

anyway the cop said that thought thought he might die if leff a bit longer, couldn't believe (he asked went was the last time he did any work for us and I said a week to ten days) based on his condition today, anyway he's at the Hudson hospital,.

.I'm wondering if I should

try to call him or not,or to let him rest for a while, I guess I can call the hospital for perhaps a status report.

Yes I'm very glad that "I"he's called,.... TODAY.....

I had planned on calling but not until sometime tomorrow,if things were not considerably better. I delayed doing that because he made me promise not to call anyone! I was contemplating whether or not to break that promise, but I hesitated. He also told me that he was able to sit up, which sounded like a bit of progress. But the police found him on the floor and pretty much incoherent by the time they got there only a few hours later. he definitely turned much worse in a short time and I couldn't get him to answer phone.

Again I think he was embarrassed to have someone come to his house because of the fact he was naked and for days I think he was incontinent and soiled his couch. I tried to tell them that the rescue squad almost for sure as seen worse. But he still told me that he didn't want me to call anyone! I was also thinking that maybe he wasn't in his right mind in saying that being dehydrated etc.

But frankly Richard, MC,Dee ANN,Vee,.made me Act sooner. You know you guys almost for sure saved his life according to the emergency room doctors and the police who said he probably wouldn't have survived until the next day. You can take pride in that your advice saved a life.

Also there was some great tips from the others here.

What a great site this is! --66.30.xx.xxx

Glad to hear a crisis is being averted. You might consider sending service master or a cleaning crew and replacing his sofa. Surely there is an office of the aging in that community. Also the hospital should have a social worker assigned to him that you could contact. --172.58.xxx.xxx

Hollis, no immediate need to line up someone to check on him or provide doctor visit rides. He is not going home. When he leaves the hospital, they will send him to rehab. Then, the county (or whatever organization your area uses) will assign him a social worker and deem him unable to live alone, at least for a while. They will figure out how he got in such bad shape - routine illness that just got the best of him, something else long term, mental issues, etc. --98.237.xxx.xx

I have personal experience with this at one of my rentals.

It may differ somewhat based on jurisdiction, but...

Police will go to the house and knock on the doors. If no answer, they may look in any open windows. They will NOT enter the home unless there is OBVIOUS signs of something wrong, like a blood trail out the door or a broken window. They may try calling the homeowner to see if they will answer.

Just saw the update...good news! --99.92.xxx.xxx

A bit frustrating as ,I guess because of HIPPA laws they will not give out any information on his status, But the ER nurse did day say last night that he was alert and getting stronger.

I did hear that they were going to move him upstairs and again I first called the ER and she said to call them,as they were able to give more information .but they were the ones that said they could not give out any status information to a non family member which he only has a brother and he is non communitiv,,and wich I don't have his name or number,.. --96.236.xxx.xx

Hollis,

Why be shy?

At least start with a phone call.

He is a friend in need.

Bible: Jesus' teaching example "What you do for others you do for me. When I was sick you visited me".

100 miles is just a 2 hour drive. Plus you have props in that area that you need to check on.

Ask the desk nurse to ask him to sign permission for them to talk to you.

Also be aware, some hospitals are not allowing visitors so ask about that.

Congrats on helping him when he could not help himself. You saved his life.
