The local accountant working for my county never paid employment taxes to the state ontime and we, the people, had to pay fines of over 4.5 million dollars. Local PBS news ferreted that info out. We had services taken away like a second garbage pickup, separating recycling, no leaf pickup, dumpsite closed. I am hoping someone will sue the state. I posted this on Twit. This is crazy. Why would the state of NJ not report this guy to his boss or arrest him? whyy.org/articles/mercer-county-new-jersey-tax-penalties-late-filings-david-miller-comptroller-report/?fbclid=IwAR25JLJSwu7I6pQyUYYwGRuMyofKnIU-DlXiPagMuZMNJQsH_SNCcbDX6Wc --71.188.xx.xxx

The perp has the title of "comptroller". Hope the state didn't set him up to do that to squeeze us for a little more. --71.188.xx.xxx

A lot of persons in local government quit high paying jobs taking just a average paying government job. Why. The bribes and bonuses are out of this world. Free vehicle with gas credit card. The them and their spouse. Sometimes almost free housing. --47.149.xxx.x

I don't see why you think the comptroller is the "perp" here and/or "the local accountant." (Unless by the "local accountant", you actually mean the county CFO, who was the real problem here.) The comptroller generally controls the treasury. During the PBS investigation, the comptroller answered the proper questions about what money was spent -- the comptroller is what helped to discover the problem here.

The "perp" is David Miller -- the county's CFO -- who did weird accounting things, paid everything late, and was not qualified to hold the position as he didn't have the proper credentials (and never even applied to get them)!

There may be other "perps" in the end -- since other county officials were apparently aware of the problems -- but I don't see why you are blaming the state comptroller here.

David Miller basically told people that paying millions in late charges to the IRS was "part of doing business." The guy had no idea what he was doing and was kept there for over a decade doing that stuff. Sounds like the entire county office is pretty messed up.

But I don't get why you are blaming the wrong people... The county officials -- who should have known this was going on -- are blaming the comptroller for making the information public! They wanted to keep it private and said that it was "under control" because they were doing their own investigation.

You seem to be mad at the wrong people here, Ally...
