Not exactly typical plumbing but I suspect you might be familiar with the issue.

I've got good quality (when new) but decades old pump for pool.

I know these days they have variable speed pumps and I believe they have big rebates but not sure if that program still exists.

I might need to replace pump in near future (You got me thinking all the time about being both prepared and proactive) so I want to be prepared and do some shopping in advance.

Do I want one of the variable speed pumps or standard type pump, and which brand would be a good choice for a medium sized pool at home that is rarely used in recent years??

Thanks.

You can't buy single speed pumps in California anymore because they use more energy per gallon pumped. Get a good variable speed pump, run it at a lower speed, but for more hours. I like pentair or hayward, but they're spendy. Believe it or not, Black and Decker sell an inexpensive variable speed pump with a good warranty. google it. Ed --108.201.xx.xx

I needed several pumps, filters and heaters for various pools. With the pandemic and suppliers going belly up, they were over priced and hard to come-by. Ed's advice was spot on.

So I turned to a friend who makes and installs new pools or upgrades old ones. I asked me "please" for some used equipment. Known this guy for a dozen years and I help him out when he gets in over his head on a job. He turned out to be no help. Plumbers and pool companies stock old systems for parts and repairs. I even went to some Leslie's pool supply closed up and trying to sell stock. No discounts.

So in the end I had to go to a wholesale house and settle for a small contractor discount.

O.K., thanks.

I have heard of both Pentair and Hayward since when the filter was acting up, I started looking at possible replacement. However, it turned out that replacing only the grids inside the filter resulted in significant improvement. Filter works really well now.
