News article this morning on the White house announcement to roll out a "renters bill of rights" in response to the left push because of rent increases. It seems the WH is going to weaponize several branches of Government to create the effect without having to request authority from Congress. I found it most interesting that the left thinks the Federal Trade Commission already has the power to limit rent increases and apparently the WH is going along. Sounds like there is going to be another showdown in the Supreme Court under this administration.

This how they impose socialism on conservative areas. Idaho did not allow the homeless to sleep on the sidewalks downtown and along comes the federal government with a court order that Idaho must allow the homeless to sleep on the sidewalks downtown.

Idaho did not have a rent moratorium and along comes the federal government with a federally mandated one.

Idaho landlord tenant laws are balanced, but it looks like the federal government is planning on fixing that problem for us. --76.178.xxx.xxx

Will they impose the same restrictions across the board on all businesses? Grocery stores and restaurants being forced to keep the costs down and give away free food?

Auto sales?

If you look at your utility bill there are a whole bunch of extra surcharges that the utility passes on to the consumer to pay for those who aren't paying or won't pay (or "can't" pay) the utility bill. --64.246.xxx.xx

Pity that I cannot find a single post here which deals with the real problem at hand. I find only sarcastic complaints about the “Left”, about weaponizing government agencies, as though they were not created by Congress to have any power), “weaponizing” the power of the government, “Socialism”, a balance of laws that does not solve problems, diversionary characterizations that don’t characterize the present problem, references to idiot loonies as though THEY were the ones that don’t understand that there is no problem, here. No one here wants to admit that there really IS a real problem facing our government that has to be solved.

Earlier posts on the subject have advocated “avoiding sinkholes” on he way to owner/manager enjoyment (note the White House attention to unscrupulous tactics like filing evictions to raise rents), that there is nothing that we can do (for what kind of reasons?), the “libs”, that we have a Constitution that “protects us from seizure of private property for the public good”, and other senseless replies that reflect ONLY the landlord’s pain at not being able to do whatever he wants.

To an educated man it’s a disappointment. More experienced leaders could have engaged with the problem, taken part in defining the problem and its extent, helped to develop and propose sensible solutions that, while there may remain pain, might have minimized most extreme discomfort and unfairness. That’s what educated and effective leaders do in the 21st Century.

Moshe,

Please explain why it is OK for the federal government to restrict landlords from making enough money on their investment properties to pay the associated bills and still make a profit, but it is not OK for the federal government to impose the same restrictions on other necessities such as grocery stores, gas stations, insurance companies, and state/local governments that impose taxes?

Landlords are running businesses. The purpose of running a business is to make a profit, so if the business is not making a profit, it closes its doors. Or, in the case of landlords, they will have to sell their property.

*I didn't include restaurants in my list of businesses because going to a restaurant is a choice rather than a necessity. --205.204.xx.xxx

Since housing shortages, materials over-runs, costs of doing business are sky-high around the world right now - and the lack of affordable housing is a GLOBAL ISSUE - name an "educated and effective leader in the 21st Century" who has proposed workable solutions, Moshe. I'd like to read about them.

But given that it IS a global issue, for many reasons large and small, it's no surprise that you are not finding the answer you want on a landlord's chat board. --50.82.xxx.xxx

You're right except the left didn't want any educated people included in the solution, they only wanted a free lunch at someone else's expense. Notice that the WH didn't engage across the aisle to help find a solution, they didn't seek input from professional housing suppliers, they conducted no research or analytics on likely outcomes of their proposal, they simply caved to extremely vocal minority and are giving in to their demands as illogical and unconstitutional as they are. So, I have to agree than an effective leader would have handled it differently.

Rather than tackle the real problem (shortage of affordable housing) they are attacking the people who provide the service and attempting to make them suffer which will only cause a bigger shortage. A completely illogical approach.

I do have to ask, do you really believe that the congressional act that established the FTC includes the ability to set rent rates? In reality, it is no different than the CDC dictating an eviction moratorium which was unconstitutional as rendered by the high court. But as I remember you were suggesting we just fall in line with that one too, heck with those rights given to us in the constitution just roll over and take it seems to be your motto. I really don't get how you view life: the government and left is always right/good and landlords are always greedy/wrong. That's a pretty myopic way of looking at the world. It just furthers my resolve to donate to organizations that are standing up and fighting the government overreach and attempts to take away constitutionally granted freedoms. I take great pride in giving dollars to one of the organizations that successfully challenged the last one in the supreme court, I expect to be active in this challenge as well since we have a leader that is shirking the responsibility of the oath he took.
