Dollars to donuts its low on gas because the guy who installed it didn't do it correctly or the cheap parts from overseas had a pin hole leak and gradually let all the expensive freon out. You will quickly find out your 10 year warranty will cover the leaky coil but not the labor or the gas to go in it. :-( --65.188.xxx.xxx |

If it that new look for the purple sticker - 410, the freon cost won't send you crying in your beer. But heat pumps run backwards of A/C - you prolly knew that, so it is common to see frost form on the lines, you will need heat pump gauges to get an idea of the charge value left - both the blue and red will have 7 or 800 lb readings possible but you should see 100 low side and at least double the outdoor temp plus 100 on the high side. A common failure item is the outdoor unit capacitor, it operates both the fan and the pump, keep a spare in a sandwich bag once you know the value (45-5 or similar). --76.190.xxx.xxx |

My HVAC man just left the scene and said something (thermostat on the outside unit) had prevented the heat strips from coming on. System is working fine now.
I think I am going to start using gas fired units for heat instead of heat pumps which seem to have an excessive amount of nickel and dime repair issues. --71.207.xxx.x |

We keep our HVAC man on speed dial! Seriously, he is so good to us, we just had the second electric furnace to keep running and not cut off. Tenant was lucky it was only 83 when he came home. The first one was a high limit switch, he hasn't come by to get paid for the last one yet but I imagine it was the same thing. --216.126.xx.xxx |

in summer the ac cycles through the system like any other unit that cools.
In winter when you select heat the shuttle valve goes to the heat side. So now freon is cycling the opposite direction so rather than cool freon its the HOT freon pipe running through the system. Basic system the shuttle valve is a reversing flow valve--
THEY get stuck--- sometimes if you can see the valve hit it with the wooden handle of a hammer and it will cycle.
No it's not normal for the unit to ice up in winter-- but when it doesn't shuttle over your AC'ing the house not heating it.

We've used heat pumps here in the north for years. We've learned two things:
1. Buy a couple of steps up from contractor grade, and go with either Trane or Lennox.
2. Remember that heat pumps for the northern states are "heat biased", and for southern states are "cooling biased". Be sure that you get the right bias for your area.
We just put in a Trane XL series 18 that is one step below the top of the line for a B+ 3br sfh. It has 2 stages for both the compressor and the indoor blower unit, plus the usual radiant backup heat. This is the first heat pump that we've ever had that actually pumps out air that feels warm WITHOUT the backup heat running (we made the installer take the cover off of the backup heat strips to be sure when we felt warm air from the vents)! When our home Trane quits (16+ years with only minor repairs), we'll go to one of these. --96.245.xx.xx |
