The kenmore stove top burners on a gas stove no longer light.

When the valves are turned on, the igniter does not produce any spark. None of the valves will spark.

The “glow plug” for the oven does work.

The gas is on and the stove is plugged up.

Any suggestions on why the burners will not light?

Thanks!

Can you smell gas when you turn a burner on? Can you light it with a match or lighter when the burner is turned on? Do you hear a clicking when you turn a burner on? These are the type of questions I ask when trying to diagnose a problem with a gas stove.

If you can hear a clicking when you turn a burner on then it might just need to have the ignitor cleaned. It's also possible that the ignitor is bad & needs to be replaced. --72.93.xxx.xx

Had this problem once. All burner ignitors light simultaneously whenever ANY individual burner is turned on. Turned out one of the ignitors had "goo" (spillage) on it and sort of shorted out all ignitors. Found it via a simple visual inspection. Can you isolate individual ignitors to possibly isolate the problem? --73.215.xxx.xx

A few things. Gas on or not has no effect on spark. 2 separate events.

Clean and check each of the 4 spark generators those are the pieces sticking up from the stove top. -- a little sand paper to clean.

On the 4 pieces mounted on the stove top-- degrease all of them on the bottom where the spark generator tip would come close. If you can imagine how a spark plug work that's how the spark should be.

If you get no spark at all then I would go for the spark block. It's the item on the side and back of the stove that sparks the ignitors. Rectangular box. --108.239.xx.xx

I had this happen on my own stove and had to replace the electronics that were attached to the burner knobs that controlled the igniters. Let us know what you find. --99.165.xx.xxx

If you can confirm that the igniter for the burners and the glow plug for the oven stopped working at the same time then it is more likely electronic board or an electrical issue. Are you sure the outlet it's plugged into has power and is wired correctly? --209.205.xxx.xx

Mike he said the oven glow is working. A note about glow plugs (and same is true in gas furnaces) the glow plug may be on but if it's old it may not draw the amps needed to open the circuit. The happens more often then not on oven stoves as opposed to furnaces.

Other question did you put the stove top pieces on the right burners-- they are lettered. --108.239.xx.xx

If gas is flowing and you have spark but no ignition …

Remove the circular gas disburser noting the relative location of the spark igniter.

Locate the small hole near the edge of the disburser that allows gas to reach the igniter. It could be restricted by boil over krud.

Using a paper clip wire, clear out the krud.

Replace disburser.

Test.

Yes, the oven glow plug works fine and heats up.

The individual burners will light manually with a match. The burn ok - but they do not automatically light when the gas is turned on.

The stove no longer makes the clicking sound when the burner is turned on.

The stove is not clean, but, the vent holes in the burner tops are clear.

I never noticed lettering on the burner tops. But, they seem to be seated correctly. I will check on that.

I will go over this afternoon and do some more checking.

Thanks for the feedback! --174.206.xx.xx

Some gas stove the cover can be removed then the burner can be cleaned. Try that firxt. If in dark will usually see a spark then then there high voltage to burnar. --68.69.xxx.xxx

Burner crud, that seems to happen with tenant crud in general. If you have to use oven cleaner to -uncrud- the cruddy thing lay damp newspaper over each burner to keep the oven cleaner effective for longer time, overnight the aluminum will start to look really nice. --76.190.xxx.xxx

If it's not clicking, your most likely problem is a faulty spark module (also known as a surface igniter). It's fairly common - they burn out over time.

Get the stove model number - look up the part number on google and buy from amazon or ebay. They install easily.

This is why I prefer the old style pilot lights. Alas, no one is producing stoves with pilot flames. Gotta save that dollar's worth of gas a year! --73.194.xxx.xxx
