I recently got called out for being "braggadocious".
First off, I applaud the proper use of a word that we just don't hear often these days. Language variety suffers online as people substitute numbers, emojis, and other odd icons to represent thoughts. Grammar too is often overlooked. And punctuation? Forget about it!
However, though the word was used properly... I do not agree that it was used accurately. Here are my reasons why.
While drawing an analogy about picking up change, I mentioned a rather large deal--my biggest to date--that I recently closed. The intent was to say, "Look at me, you losers!" That would have been bragging. The intent was to say that as our success grows, the way we value our time and the activities we choose to engage in to grow our wealth likewise change. Deals that we started off with may no longer tempt us, or they may. It depends on what our goals are.
No, I didn't come to brag. Rather, I came here because this is one of the few places I feel comfy actually discussing some of what I view as my greatest successes. We "get" each other here. This community understands the hard work, toil, tears, and sacrifices it takes to be a landlord. Whether you own 1 door of 1000 doors: you've done something amazing to provide a desperately needed service to people in an environment that is often harsh to us legally and in the sphere of public opinion. Those who are not us call us slumlords...the greedy 1%...the evil landlord.... if you can think of an insult or cuss word, chances are it's been hurled our way.
I usually don't talk about it to family or friends who aren't landlords or business owners. Often either they aren't interested, or they would also regard it as bragging, or they would be jealous, or for whatever reason they wouldn't appreciate what I'm trying to say.
The fact that we here can and do succeed and that we receive few or no accolades from John Q Public is extraordinary! If we don't occasionally talk about our successes, I fear we miss out on a chance to learn from each other.
That's why I feel comfy coming here to share my success. You all understand what it takes to be successful, and--hopefully--are okay celebrating together. I'll always celebrate your success, whether you just bought your first tired fix and flip, or if you just closed a mega apartment complex or if you've said "Enough!" and just sold your last unit. Who knows? Maybe one or two of my stories will inspire someone else to give it a try and/or press forward to the next level.
Here's to you, my fellow landlords!

Typo... The intent was to say, "Look at me, you losers!"
Should be... The intent WASN'T to say, "Look at me, you losers!" --184.4.xx.xx |

Dear Loser Sid. When I read that post -- the one about closing on the building that Friday-- and how the rest of us were losers for buying SFH's etc.. Were wasting our time. I looked at the source. Actually I also look at what State the source is from and MO is one of those loser states. You know like people from KY-- they wear bib overall's. (which says it all)
Since I already knew you were a loser and braggart it didn't effect me that much.
I feel certain others will jump in from NY, NJ, MD, FL,TX and a few from GA. (although we wear bib overalls in south GA)
Keep up the good degrading comments I love them and cherry pick some for future use. --108.239.xx.xx |

I'm always glad to hear when other real estate investors are doing well. Each one of us has different priorities and interests so not everything is for each one of us.
However, Sid it is good to hear what others are doing so we can expand our minds and our options to see if it is an option that we might want to also pursue.

Love to hear when others do well (unless you were my competitor and stole a deal from me ;)
Those on here who don't understand your point above don't understand this Board, and probably have never been to a Convention or Retreat to understand what relief it is to be able to talk about these things with people who "understand." --50.82.xxx.xxx |

My experience is that landlord-investors do not flaunt their wealth like those in other professions or investments. I always say when you see a landlord driving an older work truck and with a splotch of paint on most of his articles of clothing, he may well be a multi-millionaire. --73.141.xxx.xxx |

I rarely talk to my coworkers regarding me being a LL. I will say something if I hear something incredibly stupid like "I don't know why I had to move". Really? No clue? Or about a friend or relative and the horrible LL. I get it,there are some bad ones, but usually there is another side.Tired of hearing how the mean LL raised the rent or won't allow a pet you now want.

Well said. My Grandpa was at Pearl Harbor. Rarely spoke about the war. 30-40 years after the war, my Aunt took him to an event for WWII Soldiers. They all talked and visited exhaustively about the war.... when my Aunt was driving him home, she asked why he spoke so much of it that day with his fellow soldiers and almost never when at home.
His response - they all were there too. Just like we're all here in our own corner... --23.126.xx.xxx |

We talk shop here, its one of the few places we can. Some people deal in more zeros than others but we are all in the same business. I didn't read your thread as bragging your career is moving to the next level and your excited, that's a wonderful thing! --32.219.xxx.xx |

Taking the leap into commercial real estate is a huge leap of faith. It is scary because it forces folks to get out of their comfort zone.
But for those who take that leap, the rewards are huge. The ease of management and responsibility level of tenants is like going from class D apartments to class B SFHs. Night and day and your life as a landlord gets so much easier.
It is my hope that most of the leaders on this board, take that jump.....as long as it isn't you electing to by a high maintenance product like a hotel as an OPERATOR of that business.
It simply isn't bragging if you are doing.
That said, with much reward also comes with some risk. These are not earth shattering at all, especially after you fully understand how values are appraised and more importantly created. Suddenly the game becomes SFHs on steroids.
So I applaud, hearing about anyone's success. That first piece of junk house that I bought scared me just the same as my first million dollar deal did.

Thank you all for your comments and support. It is much appreciated!
I think anyone who has the guts and grit to open a business deserves respect. That said, how often do we -- many of us who treat our rentals like a business -- go into a small local business that's been around 10, 20, 30 years or more that has grown and say to the owner, "Congrats, I really am happy for your success?"
I freely admit I haven't done that as much as I should, although I do always try to compliment a business owner when I meet them in person. "Atta boys" are tough to come by once you become an adult, and a quick congratulations from one's peers is encouraging to continue doing what we're doing, even when the money/finances are heading into uncharted waters.
You all "get me" and I hope that my comments show that I "get you" too. Yes, myob, I knew you were joking, but even if you weren't... I've had to develop thick skin in this biz. If you've never been called a "$%#$! Slumlord" by a tenant who is behind on the rent for the 3rd time in 6 months... can you really say you're truly a landlord? (*grins)
Cheers to y'all, and Happy Friday!

Sid your a great poster. Let me say I love the "Atta Boys" and live by them. I worked for a major (the major airline in ATL) airline. We use to say this 1 ahu sh*T! would wipe out 1000 Attaboys. That saying has served me well in my LL career.
We are so disrespected out there in public-- almost as much as the police lately. --108.239.xx.xx |
